Gigabit networkign speed issues.

Gigabit networking speed issues.
I recently upgraded our network to gigabit speeds (as some of you will remember from a previous thread). My issues are that on bootup the LAN card in this machine is not always defaulting to Gigabit speed. Often it only runs at 100Mbps.
I have done some fault finding, and to be honest, I am a little baffled now.
1) Used different cables, making sure the new cables have previously run at Gigabit speed without issue
2) Gone into the driver and forced to to attempt 1Gb full duplex speed.
3) Watched the driver attempt to connect at these higher speeds, but fail to establish the connection at that high speed several times in a row
4) Send the NIC back for a replacement (due to the socket being loose). Same result with new card
5) Chane the switch that the NIC connects to (first time was 4 port Netgear, then 8 port Netgear)
6) This is the strange one. If the NIC refuses to accept Gigabit speed, even when you force it in the driver there is a way to make it work. You unplug the network cable from the switch and then plug it into a DIFFERENT port on the switch. If you plug back into the same port, it stays at 100Mbps. If you plug into a different port than it goes to 1Gbs.
However, with each new windows session you have to use a different port on the switch in order to get 1Gbps
How mad is that? 
Can anyone point me in the right direction to diagnose this? I have done a web search for my NIC, which is a Dlink DGE-528T and do not find people who have issues other than those running Linux (I run XP Pro SP2)

The switches have no setup options. They are entirely automatic to my knowledge. These are the switches I have purchased:
Netgear GS605 5-Port Gigabit Desktop Switch
Netgear GS608 8-Port Gigabit Desktop Switch
The network card is this one:
D-Link DGE-528T Gigabit Desktop PCI Network Adapter
