Default MMORPG's - Your best ever

1) JUMPGATE - played for 2 years on EU server
2) Star wars galaxys - Played for 1 year on US server wanderholme.

Never really got into anything else. And not playing Online games anymore just wondered if any of you guys dabble in the addictive world of MMORPG'ing?

I used to play quite a bit Lineage 2.

I used to play on private servers though wish was a bit of a pain due to them never lasting long, espechially annoying when you spend a fair bit time making a charachter.

There can be only one...EverQuest. It was revolutionary when it came out, and nothing since - even though marginally better technically - has given the same thrill.

Another Eve person here. I took a break as I didn't have time to dedicate to it, but may give it another quick go when Trinity comes online

Coincidentally, I was checking out the Eve trailers, showing off the new engine. I've never even seen or played Eve before, but it looks lovely.

So, this new update isn't actually available yet ? May see if there's a free trial over Christmas and have a look in.

Never played MMORPGs

Probably the last "online" multiplayer game I enjoyed was A.M.P (Adventure for Multiple Players) back in 1985 when I was a nipper on Micronet with my BBC'B and WS2000 1200/75 modem, but I digress(!)

I'd have to agree, EQ was monumental. That game sucked up a lot of my spare time.

I tried WoW after that, was a much simpler easier version and after a month or so it was pretty much seen and done with. No where near the dificulty of EQ or the depth. Was amusing for a while though.

I have no interest in any more at the moment, they reduce beer drinking time too much.

Take your time with eve she's a harsh mistress but very rewarding if you take time to learn all the little aspects of it, very much the thinking persons mmorpg.

EVE Files

New 1080p trailer, it's a biggun but worth the wait.

And the best thing about that trailer - theres an add for *another* Eve "Bank".. when will people ever learn!?

Something you need to learn about eve.. don't trust your "friends" very much unless in combat, and don't trust a stranger... ever.

Oh dear, i was stunned when the guy didn't go and end up banned as it didn't break any ccp rules.

As you say the only people you can trust are corp members or people you are in combat with.

Good rule i find with newbs is to only fire when fired upon or when in doubt run!!

Had a nice red ship in lo sec while i was a newb in the covetor, luckily i warped out before he did anything nowadays i rat in my raven that has a cloak should any undesirables show up in local.

Still get the odd inexperienced person cry for help lol like hell im risking my ship.

crying for help just attracts more priates..

I was primarily a Covert Ops/EW/Stealth pilot, although my 2nd account was a freighter pilot (who never went ANYWHERE without a full escort.. and then it was a tense experience.. ). I'm hoping they've kept the accounts frozen as it wasn't that many months ago I closed them.

To be fair I've been shown an immense amount of kindness on occassion by other pilots - and they tend to be the ones you become very close to in game; but they're few and far between.

Yeah ive come across one or two very helpful people while everyone else is in it for themselves and couldn't give a monkeys.

Eve aren't known to remove old accounts, ive gone months without playing only to come back and start from where i left off, again this is what attracts so many players.

I was with the huzzah in a 100 ship group hunting pirates, that was fantastic.

As you know there's ways of playing eve, having a second account trained in covert ops for the cheetah would be great to scout ahread while the other can haul but that gets expensive.

Can either of you give a brief synopsis on EVE?

EQ was all about fantasy, wizards, warriors, elves etc, you choose a race and character and battle to gain levels and equipment etc until you can go and rape bigger monsters and get better drops etc.

In SWG you could fly ships, and take on space type missions, but there were also ground missions as well. Is this game based entirely from the spaceship point of view?

Can you give a little intro to the game and gameplay?

Cheers

I used to play EVE for more than a year. For me, the biggest issue was the inaccessibility of the end game. EVE has a unique character advancement system that is purely based on time. It does not matter how much you play the game, only how old your character is.

This means that if you join the game now, no matter how hard you play, you will never have the skill points of the people who have gone before you.

Some will say you can only have so many skills for a particular ship. Therefore if you specilise then you can match a more advanced player who is in the same ship as you. However, there are always adding new and better things that you cannot use properly.

A year ago I had 3 accounts, with 20m sp, 15m sp and 12m sp. While my 20m sp account was good with a battleship, the older players were all flying carriers that would annilhate you. By the time I got into a carrier, they were already getting into motherships. As my alt was getting really good with covert ops, they were in recons and so on.

The final nail in the coffin was the level of logistics needed for 0.0 combat. If you lose a ship then you need to buy a new ship, new guns, shield/armour stuff, ammo, other mods, implants for you clone etc etc. One little mistake could cost you many many hours to sort out.

I lost very few ships, and in my alliance I was the about the only pilot left to not loose a bs in fleet ops. However, the way I was flying to make sure these losses did not happen took a lot of the fun away. The same was said for however you fought. There are very few level playing field battles. Most battles involve you "ganking" someone (not much fun), or being "ganked" (a lot less fun).

Best advice is to try and buy an account. Otherwise you will need one real time year of skill training to start to be properly competitive in even the smallest ships.

Phantasy Star Online on the Dreamcast. I lost hundreds of hours ot that game.

And Cit of Heroes, I lost several more hundred to that one.

I tend to purposely stay away from MMO's now - purely because it's far to easy to get hooked in and lose large portions of your life.

Thats the whole point of a MMORPG! Stops people creating an account just to go on a rampage for a few hours and ruin everybody elses gameplay.

Id play SWG for 12 hours a day to get to a rank high enough to be able to compete in the PvP at the highest level. Its called grinding, it sucks, its time consuming, but it is the fun behind MMORPG's.

I played Jumpgate on EU server when it was active about 4 years ago, and yes you had to level your account, you had to spend weeks finding the right equipment for your ship. And if you crashed, or got shot down, yes, you lost it all!!

But i kid you not, the adrenaline rush i got when fighting with that much to loose was nothing like id ever felt before. Feels like your heart is about to explode its beating that fast. Only a game?? Not to the people who spend their lives living a fictional character online. Being who they cant be in real life, a Pirate? an Assasin? You make friends and allies, you make enemys and foes.

People that have never played them will never understand. I wasted 2 years of my life playing online games Luckly i was just in college so it didnt effect work.

I wouldnt recommend getting into MMORPG's if you dont have at least 5 hours a day for gaming. Just wouldnt be fun, once you log in. on some games the online maps are that vast, it can take you a good hour just to get to where you want to be to begin.

I no longer play them becasue i have a real life

But do i regret playing them... hell no. Best 2 years ever

(apart from the no sex bit)
