2 versions of windows on one machine
Somehow my mother has installed windows on her laptop twice, she has 2 partitions and the main one has xp home, the second one has a half started install of xp pro, the problem is when she boots up the machine she has a few seconds to select an operating system, otherwise it defaults to xp pro (which is not fully installed)
i need to remove this boot up option so it always loads up xp home, any ideas?

Hmm. Removing the boot option is the easy bit. My worry is that the "working" XP Home partition may in some way be dependent on the half installed XP Pro area. It is perfectly possible for multiple copies of XP to coexist without an form of adverse interaction. Its also perfectly possible for them to have a "Rumble in the Jungle", but without a ref leaving only a total mess.
A half fix is the simple removal of the boot manager. For a more long term solution an investigation into the removal of the part installed XP Pro area should really be undertaken.
Of course, if there is now some interdependency between the two OS's, then removing the part installed XP Pro will stop the machine booting.
So, I would suggest:-
1) Backup all important data
2) Double check 1)
3) Boot the XP Home partition, look at the root of c: drive, find the boot.ini file. Manually edit it to remove the reference to the XP Pro partition (simply remove that line)
4) Use a partition manager to nuke the XP Pro area. (make sure they is nothing important on that partition...see step 1)
If you screw up editing the boot.ini file all is not lost, just so long as you have your original disk. The recovery console (accessed from the CD) allows you to fix this.
