Default Ahhhh ftp probs can someone help

Trying to upload 53mb of pics to my website for a client but I'm having severe probs.

Logged into my ftp client and getting 2.7 - 3.3 kbs upload! (lycos) and according to mail I'm getting 20 - 30kbs upload on emails.

I'm on NTL 2mb BB, I have tried 4 different FTP clients, 2 different cat5 cables and even bypassing my router and connected the mac direct to the modem.

Can anyone offer any ideas why its so damn slow? Tried getting a friend to log into my site direct last night over his BT BB connection but he couldn't, kept returning uknown error.

I'm getting very pished off, and trying to work out if I can moan at NTL or Lycos (but typically I can't get hold of them till monday).

One thing you need to remember is that the 2Mb link is NOT 2Mb in both directions. Your upload speed will at most be 400K.

I suggest you pop over to a BB speed test and see what you get before thinking it's an FTP problem.

The e-mail speed... is that for LARGE e-mails?

Already did the BB test thing and can get according to that 180 - 200KBs depending on the site.

Yes the email speed is for large emails

I know 2mb pipe is not 2 mb in both directions, but I should be getting more than 2.7 - 30kbs on upload.

Had an email back this morning from Lycos and tehy said there is no problem.

Tried from work and gettting 3.2mb/s upload, but thats not suprising considering I'm on a T1 connection.

Will have to try again tonight and see if it works. Strange it will allow an FTP client to connect but you can't get a manual dos connection, it just times out on log in.

Nope, Lycos being lying gits!!!!!

Just done a test on the same folder and getting permission denied!! Yeah right on the super user account, I don't frigging think so!!!

I will get to the bottom of this, or its new host and ISP time (ISP will happen next year anyway when I move).

It is when a T1 is 1.5mbit. Your based in europe where its E1 which is 2mbit but even then 3.2mbit is over 50% faster?

FTP is a very fickle application esp for uploads. Things like latency and packet loss can severely hamper you upload speed so I'd check the routing (number of hops, latency and packet loss) between your PC and the Lycos FTP Server.

Maybe its worth asking some of the other NTL users on here to test an upload to Lycos so you have some comparison from the same ISP? That said even your upload to work at 19KB/s is pretty tame (I assume you were talking about KB=Kilobytes and not Kb=kilobits).

P1 I am, and according to NTL my upload is 25KB/s anyway. So 19 is about right.

Strangely enough I was getting 20 - 30 KB/s upload to Lycos last night. Mmmm me thinks they had a problem and won't admit it.

ALso what makes me think its Lycos is I had the oppertunity to test from 3 different connections, and all returned the same results.
