Counter Strike PC upgrade
#1
every time i play CS i'm allways last on the map (despite low ping) i assume this is due to my PC spec, its a P3 500 about 2 1/2 years old.
so... Q1- if i upgrade the pc will there be any gameplay improvement or s it just the maploading that will be quicker?
and... Q2- what is i priority to upgrade? processor? ram? graphics card?
dont want to spend much more than £250-£300 on it unless i have to.
any ideas
Tiggs
ps- i know nuthin about pc's so nothing techie

I read your thread wrong dude, fps = frames per second
you can run net_graph 1 and see what bit rate you are getting in and out, there are some tweaks to improve this but I canny find the link, anyone got a connection rate tweak page?

Your HDD may be fragmented.
How much memory have u got, that's usually a cheap and effective upgrade.
fps = frames per second
Screen res you can see in windows control panel, display, settings.
These should be the same in your CS video config menu screen. In the game itself that is. (Not when you're playing it, but when you adjust stiff like gamma etc.)

Yup and this thing appears in the bottom right which tells you your fps, in and out bit rate and some nice little graphs which should be green and flat, if they are bumpy and red then this is bad news!

net_graph 3
shows fps, ping, loss and choke which are ueful in showing how well the conection and PC are handling things.
Would suspect its more your connection than PC. is it a stupid internal modem or a decent external one ?
The three major factors for your PC will be..
1) Disk - New disks are getting ever quicker.
2) Memory - 128Mb good, 256 better anything else is for Pub Talk
3) Graphics Card - Even a modest new Geforce 2MX400 (£40ish) will help. Half-life is an old graphics engine so will not make use of any new Geforce 3 fancy bollox.

ok- did net graph 1
got:
31 fps
in: 32
out: 28
green line looked like
.'.''''...''....''.''.''..''. ie- not straight!
blue was like above but worse and red was pretty straight
whats all that mean
and the modem is external cable job (my ping always seems ok)

We need to know
Hard Disk Size
Memory Size
Grhapic Card Make/Model/PCI or AGP Slot
Operating System (98,ME,2K etc)
If the PC is a big brand stick the full Model details on and we should be able to find most of the above.
30 fps would indicate PC could do with a bit of help - What resolution is that at (640x480, 800x600, 1024x768)

I will quite happily stand corrected but I'm sure that either of the net_graph's lower your fps themselves (or so I've read on CS forums many a time).
Use cl_showfps 1 in console for more accurate figure

No mate, my old PIII which was a 450mhz, with a 16meg voodoo and 128 megs of RAM was good enough to make CS fly. Just get some more ram and a new graphics card. Half life minimum spec is only a P200!

Tiggs - Either by checking your manuals or looking inside you need to know if you have an "AGP" graphics slot on the motherboard.
PCI slots are white, AGP would be brown set further back from the rest on the right of the white PCI slots (looking down onto the M/B - all slots at the back)
