When I moved (last year) from a Telewest area to an NTL area (pre-merger, or at least pre-proper-merger) - they told me to keep the modem / chuck it... They certainly didn't want it back! When I called up to cancel the account I specifically asked what to do with it and they told me as much.
For the sake of a quick (OK, it's VM, could be slllloooowwww) phone call - Call them and tell that you have a modem that technically belongs to them and would they like to pop round and pick it up, or send you a pre-paid box and you'll ship it back??? They'll undoubtedly tell you to chuck it... and then legitimately do so.

Or as i had, sent me a box, i posted it back and it got lost...
I then got letters telling me i owed £250
Got it sorted eventually when i spoke to someone in Collections, and explained everything too them, and how they had failed on 3 occasions to come and collect too!
