Default Old Xbox

Was in Blockbusters this afternoon, now I have a 360 and the old Xbox but they had the old ones for £29 !

Now I have been wondering about doing some messing so I reckon there may be a couple coming my way for messing about with, Linux etc, failing that games in my shed.

Cant bear to wreck my existing one as its been so good.

.... I had a thought along the same lines. Because I use one as a media centre, if it ever died the grief I would get because her indoors couldn't watch the latest grey's anatomy just wouldn't be worth the hassle.

so buying a couple and getting them chipped might be the way to go

That is about as much technology as you can get for thirty quid !

And still a damn good games machine.

Have to say that a modchip and XBMC has given a new lease of life to my xbox. It's connected to my wireless network (courtesy of an Airport Express) and quite happily has media streamed to it from my iMac, so no need to actually download anything onto it's hard drive.

I still use mine, in fact I bought it from Ninnybobs from here at the northern big one a good few years back now

Luckily for me Martin told me it was chipped, so was a bit worried I might not still want it, but I gave him a fiver or tenner extra for it IIRC

I changed the hard drive and have been watching movies/series etc through my projector and in Dolby Digital for the last few years until the hard drive finally died a couple of weeks ago

I have an old spare one to go in it, but just not had chance yet LOL

I miss it at the moment now too

Just nipped down to Blockbusters and got one, couldn't resist, its seems fine, got it set up in my garden cabin, the block in there said they had ten in stock at 29.99.

Its amazing really, 30 quid for an Xbox, a free CRT courtesy of Jackos mate and I can play GTA in the shed, there is no nex gen version of GTA yet version so its state of the art !

if they are modded to run linux can they just be used as a cheap basic PC ?

ie can you install software and stuff as long as you dont need any extra cards plugged in ??

i was going to spec up a cheap PC to use at work to take customer bookings etc etc and fill in the weeks projected work rather then use a diary/filofax. this could be a bit of a cash saver

Great idea, for that money with Linux on they make a very cheap workstation.
Do they need chipping to install Linux?

Gary,
According to this you will at least need to softmod the xbox to get linux onto it.

I spent a few minutes looking: I think that theyre capable of outputting progressive 720 line signals under Linux, but not when theyre being used as a console...

Sorry, thought you were looking for info on soft modding. He uses 720p with XBMC, looks very nice. Apparently some games are 720 as well, there's a list here HDTV Pub . Com - High Definition Video Games...
