Cool Xbox 360 Elite, I don't get it?

Walking past Woolies at lunchtime, they had Elite boxes on display, so I had a quick look to see what extra you got for £299.99

I fully expect a wave of posts from the many 360 fanboys here , however it seems to me that all you get is a wireless controller, a bigger HD (which you could get seperately for much cheaper, let's be honest) and a HDMI cable.

Oh, and it's black.

Are they 'avin a larf?

All the fanboys already own 360's so i doubt they are too bothered what you get

its priced at £20 more than the original release premium 360 which initially cost £279, so looking at it that way, for an extra £20 you are getting a 120gig hd.

I thought all the "fanboys" owned ps3's

For the extra £20 you are getting a 120gb driver (instead of the 20gb one), and an hdmi port. It's an evolution rather than a revolution. Not worth upgrading if you already have one, but if I was buying one new, it's the one I'd choose...

The Elite is worth buying if you currently do not own a 360.

Wireless controller already comes with the Premiums BTW, so you can knock that off the already short list of benefits the Elite has...

One thing to bear in mind is the HD on its own retails at £129, so its worth buying with the elite if you dont currently own a 360, thats assuming you need 120gig space.

I'd go along with that. If I were buying a 360 for the first time, I would go for an Elite.

I saw on my regular gaming forum the other day that someone had taken advantage of a "great" deal at gamestation where they traded in thier premuim for £170 and got an Elite plus 2 games for £299.

As far as I could see, they have just spent £130 on two games.

Or more like they've spent £130 on the hard drive and got 2 free games with it.

When you put it like that its not a bad deal - I've been thinking of getting the bigger HDD anyway.

Mate of mine has just gotten an Elite as part of a new mobile phone deal - he got a Premium with his last one so now has 3x 360's... although I bet he hopes this one lasts longer than the 10 hours the previous one did!

Was that 10 hours kicking it round the house or 10 hours with it in the oven?

You forgot to mention you get your hearing back too

sseriously its far quieter than the original units, which is a bonus, no more mach 1 start up & Mach 2 loading effects..

i took my premium back, and changed it for an elite.

Very pleased with what i got

ok i had to give back GOW & GRAW2 & Crackdown, but as i hadnt used them it was no loss

I got bioshock for £9 so not to unhappy, I have other games to play as well

If I do it I'll probably get a 2nd hand HDD off ebay to give back so I get the chance to transfer my saves etc onto the new machine...

From my local gamestation, the offer is £160 for my premium. It comes with blue dragon which i'll also trade in or see if i can swop for something else.

They let you keep your harddrive for 30 days (£20 deposit) so you can transfer your saves.

On rllmukforum there are reports of people having thier 360 back from MS this week, and then getting the RROD.

This suggests that the extra heatsink fix on the 360 doesn't work properly.

It may be that the elite is the way to go, just for the sake of your sanity if nothing else.

My 4th Xbox lasted 10 hours before the RROD, thinking about a part ex today as my son has had no Xbox for the whole summer holidays and I'm really pi$$ed now and resent giving Microsh!t anymore money.

Does anyone know if they have changed/upgraded any components to stop the ring of death, in the Elite?

Modified heatsinks and quieter fans depending on manufacture date.

The new cooler/thinner 65nm processors are being introduced in models manufactured this november i think.

Both of my wii owning mates have just traded their wii + premium for the Elite, straight swap.

As for Blue Dragon, one swapped it for Dirt, the other had £30 cash back for it

Just to add that the HDMI port is available for the Premium models as well now

There are specific HDMI labelled boxes to look for... So is the Elite worth the extra?

Unless you got eyes like superman i'd doubt it.

Got my elite today, first thing to notice was the cables are a lot shorter and not as chunky as the premium so i need to reposition it closer to my tv, no major problem.

The 360 itself is virtually silent when idle, dvd playback and HD-DVD playback are virtually silent, there's still some noise on certain games from the dvd drive constantly spinning, altho this is down to crappy programming from the developers as Bioshock is again virtually silent during play.

There's a setting in the video display setting to set the reference to either standard, intermediate or extended, this eliminates the washed out black you get on some tv's (not sure if this was a setting in the previous xbox since the last dashboard update as i never checked), switching it to standard or intermediate left a slight imprint of the previous screen for a split second on black screens (a bit like screen burn) however switching to extended was fine, i think extended is the default setting however if you experience anything like that check it out.

All in all, it cost be £140 + my premium, and i got Bioshock for £10 from trading in the free copy of blue dragon it came with. I have my old HD for up to 30 days to give me time to copy my existing data over. The elites don't come with the data migration cable (i guess they dont expect many people will buy the elite if already owning the 360 so not worth including) so you have to send off for it (free) via a form downloadable on xbox.com.

So i've got a new console and a new 3yr warranty
