Port forwarding on a netgear router.
Has anyone had or have any success doing this?
ive been trying for ages, but with no success..
i follow the instructions (joke) to the letter but can never get the ports to open / or forward.
It returns an error of either firewall or router... (really helpfull ..not)
never actually says where the error is..

1 specific tcp/udp port or a range? globally open port(s) or locked to a specific external IP? What program is it that you need the ports forwarding to? Apart from a few of the newer Netgear router/gateways in my experience (I manage a few hundred of them), port forwarding is easy and solid with their kit. What unit is it?
If you can give us some more info it would be useful .

What version what firmware? DG834's forward ports very well. Give me a sec and if I still have any bitorrent rules set up in mine I will post them up as an image.
You are opening those ports globally and pointing them to a specific internal IP yes? If you are using XP etc have you also created ranges through the built in firewalls or disabled them? Even if you have or haven't disabled them consider using something like Peerguardian too mate.

Ok, I have just set mine up again as if I was still using torrents and not the oh-so-superior-but-not-free-for-good-service newsgroups. 192.168.11.2 is the example FIXED IP of where I want the ports forwarded to and also BT private and public port ranges rules, adjust accordingly:
Finally, if you don't use uPnP for anything I would advise to disable it on the 834 (it is enabled by default)

Well the info for the router is shown above, I don't get involved with any software firewalls at all tbh. I have used the built in ones before, I find that third party ones cause more hassle than they are worth for non it-savvy folks, especially if they already have a firewall in their router.

for what its worth U torrent only requires 1 port open IIRC which should make this easier. Also be double sure software firewalls are not interferring with this. Mr Footlongs guide is spot on so follow that. Leave the Netgear firewall on though. You could try opening the one port on the software firewall and the router and run a custom scan on GRC (Home of Gibson Research Corporation) and shields up to make sure the port has been forwarded correctly. Also make sure its been forwarded to the correct internal IP (192.168.0.xxx), this can be done via manually configuring the IP on the workstation, or in the router LAN IP setup, static IP addresses via DHCP.

No I know that wasn't aimed at you , I thought Mart had said he disabled on one post but looking now he hasn't LOL. Agree with the UPnP as well, I always switch that off when setting these routers up for home workers in my Uni

i had all this working for a while but now im only getting local, no remote connections. I think theres a connection between it stopping and me thinking the isp is now on ipv6 and blocking these remote bt connections.

If the windows and hardware firewalls were disabled and you still had problems trying to download torrents, but you could download other files, then it could well be the ISP blocking things at their end. May be worth having a look at the ISP's support section and seeing if there is any mention of what, if anything they block.

Im with aol too. I think they may be blocking some parts when CPW took over im not sure. I've had this working just fine for a while, just as youve got it but since CPW it hasnt been fully working. This is when i noticed ipv6 which i think they are now using. Just havent figured it out yet.
cant remember the exact words but are you getting something like "address blocked for public networks"?

other computers may not see you.... you will act as a server, and your dl/ul
will be slower....
the other one is ...unable to open a TCP port

Dunno how you feel about this but you can turn on remote management fo rthe router, if you do that and let me know the remote management address I will happliy look at the router for you.
Will give you my IP address so you can limit access, and turn it off after I have had a look....
then again anyone who has posted could also remotly access your router if you let them...
However you will have to let them have your router password, your ip address adn what port you want opening and where you want them forwarded to.
1 silly question I have is whats the IP address you are forwarding everything to and are you sure thats your computers IP?
