Vista problems?
Hearing more and more Vista horror stories - A mates new Vaio is constantly crashing because of it, and others are having trouble.
Looking to get a new laptop and some can be ordered with XP - Should I wait a bit for Vista's bugs to be ironed out (probably only partially) or get one with XP?

No problems whatsoever with Vista here, much more stable than XP. Problems are more related to poorly written 3rd party drivers.
Vista SP1 is meant to be out any time now apparently if you're concerned.

No problems here either. I've been using it as my main OS since January. Only use XP now when I have to (for work usually)...

I haven't had any problems with Vista once I used the 32 bit version. The 64 bit one nothing appears to work with it.
I have XP running in a Microsoft Virtual machine in Vista for anything that refuses to work on Vista and that works really well.

What "irritations for work" are those? I use it at work all the time...
I'm running 32bit vista on 2 laptops, and 64bit on my desktop. All run absolutely fine

thought not. other than that, work use is the same as home, a good bit of OS. its just the important networking side they havent sorted out maybe they havent designed it to be used in conjunction with server stuff.
Couldnt use it at all so didnt install it but ive now worked out some long winded workarounds, though irritating, it means i can do the work so i decided to install it proper

Our IT bods got it all working in the lab ok, but haven't rolled it out to the company. We still have NT4 machines on the network, so I think they may struggle with active directory

Bit of a pain for me TBH, but I still think it's a better bet for longevity Vs XP. Biggest irritation for me is lack of compatibility with Outlook 2002 because of self exposed security flaws (wtf? ) However, as already stated, SP1 is around the corner and it'll improve from thereon in....

The official word was 2nd half 2007. There have been 'leaked' versions around which are probably best avoided. Rumours have been abound with various dates, some even saying 2009 This seems an unlikely long time to me and would expect something in the next 2 months to help bolster sales and improve corporate trust in the product.

Vista Business for me.
A website I had no problems with now closes IE down and Sky Sports occasionally freezes and crashes.
McAfee and LimeWire prevent Vista from running in its preferred skin.

Vista works OK for me on a HP NC6400 laptop. A few minor irritations such as resolution is not reset when coming out of hibernation.
I used to like Vaio's but wouldn't touch them with a barge pole now - poor support, poor drivers etc.. cool but nightmare when they go wrong.

Vista working ok for me, on my laptop and 2 desktop machines. TBH most vista problems are not caused by the operating system itself, but by third party drivers. Most of those now seem to be sorted, but some are still causing minor problems. Vista has now been RTM for nearly 12 months, and has been updated through windows update as bugs have appeared. SP1 will primarily be a collection of these fixes, possibly with one or two extra features. So as long as you keep up to date, then you should have no issues.

pimmo2000, that is NOT vista sp1 beta!!
i've already applied those 2 patches and they are part of sp1 and have been officially released by MS.
there are 2 more major updates for sp1 that include the optimised code, etc that haven't been released/leaked yet.

Right - time to sound REALLY thick - if I buy a laptop now with Vista Business installed, can I download SP1 when it comes out for free?
Assume as it's a service pack, it's just a free user update?
Planning on a Lenovo Thinkpad R61 (plus a 1GB RAM upgrade to 2GB) with no particularly memory heavy functions - just multi multi tasking, major pic storage (for work, not ****!), and 100s/1000s of word files.
Why Lenovo? Tough, made for business (not some faffy designer nonsense), good value, I used to sell them then they were IBMs and they were very reliable. I may however be wrong!
