Parents are using internet explorer and have recently not been able to get on the net due to ' invalid syntax error '.

They click on the IE shortcut and they get the above error.

I have looked on microsoft site and it would appear to be some sort of problem / conflict with a security update? now there is some sort of a work round on the microsoft site, something to do with hkey????but, holding my hands up, I have no clue how to do it even after reading the page a million times.

Anybody(i'm sure there is) able to give me a run down on what to do exactly to overcome the problem.(in really easy to follow steps, please)

Parents are still on 'dial up' and only use the net every now and then but, it would be nice to get it working for them again and it would stop Dad saying that it was Mums fault that is gone wrong too.

Any help greatfully received.

I used to get syntax errors on my old Amstrad CPC 464 when I was about 6, never really understood what it meant!

Can you put a link up to the Microsoft support page. This will help to make any support more specific. Mention of hkey implies that the 'Registry' will need an update. This is pretty straightforward when you get it right!!

Daft lad, was thinking exactly the same thing, know more about them after today, only 20+years too late, still don't know enough to do anything about them though.

anybody got any ideas on this, have tried easy things like system restore(why does that never work?) no joy there, apparantly no changes have been made.

tried ticking the disable script debugging, no joy there either.

Rannoch, you mentioned the 'registry update' any more info greatfuly received.

If you click on the 'E' icon just once, use the right hand mouse button and select properties. What is in the 'target' box?

It should be something like:


"C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe"
