Angry Trouble installing a printer

ok, I've got an HP deskjet 5150 that I am trying to install on my laptop running XP (sp2).

I have the installation disk and it autoruns fine and goes through most of the installation fine, but then near the end of the installation it asks me to plug in the printer. I do that and then the stupid auto-install-new-hardware thing pops up in the bottom right hand corner and then it all goes to pot.

The HP installation goes in to "roll-back" and says installation was unable to be completed, please try again and the auto install thingamajig stops because it can't find the correct file

Could it be the auto install thingy be causing the problem and if so can I disable it?

I have tried "adding new hardware" the old fashioned way but the printer isn't listed and when I say I "have disk" I don't know which folder I should be selecting for the drivers!

Please help

Easiest way with these HP's is....

leave printer connected, at the point it asks you to connect the printer;.

1) Open Device Manager

Click Start, Click Run, Type devmgmt.msc and press Enter

OR

To open Device Manager, click Start, and then click Control Panel. Click Performance and Maintenance, and then click System. On the Hardware tab, click Device Manager.

2) Right click on HP printer under UNKNOWN DEVICES
3) Click Uninstall
4) Scan for hardware changes (icon at top with magnify glass)

This will kick the installer into life.

Im talking about the point in which it asks you to connect the printer, after connecting the printer nothing happens.

Managed to get it installed although it still didn't do it using the disc.

Did it the old fashioned way using the auto install and managed to find the driver on the cd when it asked for it.

Works ok still, just didn't get the supporting HP software installed, not too bothered about that though.

Thanks for all the assistance and advice!
