Default Laptop advice

Hi All

I want to buy a new laptop and I need it next week.

I'm looking for a really good, large screen - more than likely widescreen.
Not bothered about it being quite heavy as won't move it that often.
Pretty grunty, in order to run 3D rendering software, etc.
Would be great to have some decent audio capabilities for sound recording / mixing and video editing, etc.
HD DVD would be great.
At least 2GB RAM

Any suggestions / opinions / advice would be great.

Cheers

Simon

You going to be doing some recording again then

Depending on what kind of audio recording you are going to be doing I would be tempted to go external and not use onboard, but it does depend on how critical the audio is likely to be

Why a laptop if your not moving it ??

You can get a much more powerful desktop for the same money ?

I just sold my macbook pro. Had all of those requirements, apart from HD DVD.
17" High res Widescreen but are not heavy at all.

Expect HD (well, Blu ray) in the next release, but don't know when that will be. Maybe next Tuesday with their announcements.

Sorry guys, only got back today and forgot to check this thread this morning.

OK.. why notebook?

Takes up much less space, and can be just packed away. Can sit it on lap infront of telly if necessary, etc, etc, etc.

Don't want a Mac... well I'll rephrase. I would love a Mac, but due to the massive need for me to be windows compatible, I just can't justify it.

Also.. the music recording side isn't key here.. its only a small "if there are two that do everything I want, and one has some cool music recording stuff as well, go for that one" kind of thing.

In terms of Dell. don't they normally take a while to deliver?

I like the HP Pavilion series, but finding somewhere with a top end one which I can pick up / have delivered this week is proving tricky.

Thanks for the replies so far chaps.

I have never waited more than 5-7 days for a Dell, i have had several over the past 12 years or so. Check the Dell outlet (link on Dell site), they may have one ofd the right spec already made up and waiting to go. If so pay and it will be with you in two days.

HP Pavilion - i had one for a while last year, nice finish (if a tad fragile), well built and worked a treat.

All new intel based Macs can run XP (must be XP SP2) or Vista. Using a Virtual Machine solution may not cut it for you, but using BootCamp, which is Apple's dual boot solution, will allow you to boot directly into XP/Vista. Quite a few of the Mac users on here, including myself have their machines setup like this. There isn't anything to stop you from having, for example, a 10GB Mac OS X partition and giving the rest over to Windows, as I'd guess you'd not need to boot into OS X that often.

Tomorrow is when Apple is alleged to be revealing some new machines, but it's stated these will be iMacs, rather than the laptops, but there might be some updates for the Macbook range.

Get one of the HP mobile workstations, which have just been announced:
8510w (incl. 3 year onsite support) or 8710w (incl. 3 year pickup & return)
See this Link: Extreme Power - comparison results Small & Medium Business - HP These business computers have longer life-cycles and are built even stronger than the pavillion range.

Thanks guys

The mobile workstations are too pricey for me really.

I'm just going to go with a microsoft based laptop, as I don't want the extra hassle / potential hassle of the dual boot, etc.

I'll get a mac one day, but probably as a dedicated multimedia machine.

Looks like its a trip to PC world then!

Si - I've got a Dell Inspiron 9400 for work at the moment. It's a bit of a beast (17" widescreen - which is stunning (specify the gloss finish it's better)), but it comes with just about everything you want. 2.16 Ghz Core 2 Duo processor with 2 Gb RAM means it works quite well! 160Gb hard drive with CD and DVD writer.

I use it for customer demos and it is often running 3 or 4 VMWare sessions with no problem. Delivered within a couple of days as I remember.
