Default Orange Broadband - good/bad?

I'm looking at swapping from BT broadband. The simple reason, it would appear that my line is cack, and although I can't fault BT for reliability, the speed is very poor, and I have a 2gb limit. The price isn't so hot either!
Now being an Orance customer on a £35 a month contract, I can have unlimited broadband for only a fiver a month. And free landline calls through the livebox. Granted, the speed will probably be just as bad, but It's MUCH cheaper, and won't have to watch how much I've downloaded either.

There's the reasoning, but my question is this. Has anyone had any good/bad experiences with orange?
I have a mate who uses them and he's had no problems whatsoever, but I figured it can't hurt to get a few more opinions.

Thanks in advance

I gotta say guys, I'm not feeling the lurve for Orange broadband
Anyone got any examples of faults? Speed I can handle, as I'm regularly receiving well under 1meg on BT anyway. But I'm presuming no connection whatsoever is an issue?

yes I would imagine so, and slow speeds and non existant customer service. 1 meg speed could be several things

* Poor line stats
* poor internal wiring
* congested exchange
* distance/attenuation

for a budget check these, won't be unlimited though

what can you get at your exchange

I'm pretty sure it's a mix of distance from the exchange, and congestion. My house is only a few years old, and I installed the short extension up the internal wall to the PC myself using Cat5e. And if I try at different times of the night/day, I can on occasion get 2-3 meg.

Line stat's however mean nothing to me. Anything I can do to prove or disprove this?

Just looking at that last link you posted. This is my exchange. I see cable is available, but when I spoke to NTL they said I'd be on their adsl service, not their cable service. Is that right?

Noise Margin is Ok but attenuation is very high (bad) indeed!!!!

you must be far from the exchange

what router/modem are you currently using, a stable router is needed here

ADSL Nation On-Line Shop

check the above also

speed will never be great with that attenuation to be honest, I've seen one with 74dB and all he could get was 512K/bit

I'm currently using the BT Voyager 2091 that came from BT when I signed up.
I'll take a rough guess that that's a bad thing??
My Router isn't actually connected to the master however, so that master socket wouldn't really help me I don't think. Although I do also have 2 other Cat5e cables routed to upstairs, so the router could be put by the master if absolutely necessary, and the PC could be connected via one of those?

Some people swear by those to be honest and if it's been stable then that's fine

Those sockets can help, the sync rate may increase but I can't see it making a huge difference to be honest. I'd get one if you don't already have one though, but it depends how awkward changing the rest of your setup would be as the router MUST in the master to see full benefits!

To be fair to it, in 15 months it's had a connection 99% of the time. Just a slow one. Looks like I'm best off sticking with BT then if Orange are a no-go.

Cheers for all the replies though, Much appreciated
