Mad Macs
Was sitting in a hotel waiting for a web page to load over wireless using Firefox as my browser. Whilst waiting my screen went dark but not in the normal way.
It was if someone was lowering a dark net curtain slowly over the screen. Once the screen had gone dark a message came up in about five different languages.
The English version said "You must restart your computer, please hold down the power button to restart." It was clear this was a fundamental abend.
It did not restart until I had powered down, removed the power lead and the battery and cold booted it.
When I restarted I got a window asking if I wanted to report my problem to Apple. This is included a log of the abend.
Anyone else ever had such an experience with a Mac?

That is what is referred to as a Kernel Panic.
Used to have it moreso in version 10.0....... rather unstable (reminiscent of any Windows platform )
Double-check all is up-to-date.......

David,
As Dan says this is a Kernel panic, a true Macintosh equivalent to the Blue Screen of Death. It's fairly rare to get one as most of the time apps will just crash and let the machine continue with what it's doing, but sometimes, wham, you're screwed.
If you were able to reproduce this 100 percent of the time then I would say there is a problem with whatever you are doing. If it's a one-off I'd not worry too much, but it's always worth making sure you're up to date.

Whenever I see the panic log I either think of Hitchhikers or Dad's Army If I recall, it is possible to customize the KP screen that appears and someone did drop in a picture of "The Book" with it's lovely message being displayed
