as you can see not a happy bunny...
Spent hours getting my PC back up after a virus.. then bought Return to Castle Wolfenstien and StarWars Battle Grounds..
Installed RTCW and the intro seemed a little ropey, problems with see through vectors on the people and bad textures.. but in game seemed ok..
Then put SWBG on, and installed DirectX 8.0a off the CD as it kept crashing when DirectX8.0 was installed, and now SWBG doesn't work at all and crashes the computer and RTCW does work properly and the sound doesn't work on the PC! arrghhh
PLEASE HELP!!!
PC = P4, 128MB (RDRAM), ATI RADEON, CL SOUNDBLASTER PCI 128, WinME..
What do i need to do!?!??!
Thanks, Alex

Try updating to the latest version of DirectX and video card drivers.
Never let any game install directX. Its most likely to down rev your version.

I steer clear of P4's with ME and 98SE, but that's probably just due to the cr@p @c3r machines that we sell on at work. I have never seen a machine kick off so many patches running ME in my life!
Not my strong side of things, but what motherboard are you using? Is it an intel i845-based chipset or VIA?
I have found that the Intel Application Accelerator (28/11/01 onwards, ignore the name, installs drivers as well as whatever else the actual thing is)needs to be installed to help gain anything resembling stability on these 2 OS's, but particularly 98
Seem to remember sound-related problems with a couple of people's machines running PCI128's with ME. Did ME use it's own drivers(if they are there) or did you use the old CD? I am pretty sure that newer drivers were required from creative, but you probably have those already.
Cheers,
Nick

To summarise, I've:
installed the motherboard patch + intel bus patch, the m/b is called a "monterrey" board, GB something or other...
I installed new sound card drivers (newer than the ME ones) and the ATI driver (jan 2001)...
I'm gonna look for newer drivers now !
Cheers, Alex

Cheers all!
Got it all working now..
Removed the Intel ATA100 storage driver (high speed read/write for the controller on my system) its was the problem with StarWars
Also have reverted to what appears to be the RADEON driver I had when I got the system and DirectX 8.1
Now both games seem to work fine
Happy bunny now
Cheers, Alex
PS. shame gateway don't supply detailed install instructions
PPS. Happy NY to you all!
