Default Securing Emails (Sending & Receiving)

This is one for the security experts in here.

Can anyone tell me how I would go about sending secure emails. I know they can never be 100% secure, but I am sure I can send them a damn lot more secure than the standard rubbish.

Do I need some software to do this other than Outlook Express? I read something about Certificates, but what are these and where do I get one?

Thanks for any help.

Thanks. That makes it a little clearer. Seems messy and awkward though, so I think I will just zip it all up and protect the zip file - will be much easier!

I second PGP, although in England you legally have to hand over the encryption key if required to do so by the government.
