Question XBOX360 / LCD / HD question

I'm in the market for a new telly, had my 32" CRT for 10 years or so and with the 360 getting some use I figure I should be taking advantage of it.

I understand the difference between 720/1080 i/p and have it in my head I want a 1080p telly.
A friend has the Sony KDL40X2000, lovely bit of kit but would only seem to do 1080i with the 360 as its component.

The bloke in Comet (yeah I know... but he seemed to know what he was on about) said there are some that support 1080p over component. One was a Toshiba and another a Samsung, he also said the Sony screen is a Samsung panel anyway... ok, the processing is different...

So the question is can you get LCDs that support 1080p over component.
Will/Can you notice a difference?
How bad will the bigger be with Freeview/NTL digital (Not V+)

I'm not absolutely sure about 40/42 or 46/47 - heart says big head says small.
Lounge is fair size but funny shape, can't do the ideal cinema 5.1/7.1 setup but it's ok. Won't be too close to the screen - maybe 8-12 feet at a guess. Sound is covered by Denon/Kef combo.

Does anyone have any recommendations, places to read, cheaper places then cheapelectricals.co.uk and avforums.com.

Budget 1500-2000 I suppose.

Rich

I'd recommend a samsung. Get the best you can afford as they are out dating weekly

360 games are generally done at 720 and would be upscaled however i'd still get a 1080 for hdtv and hddvd.

As for viewing distance, usually a minimum of at least 2x the screen width is recommend for viewing.

1080p is good if you have a masshoosive screen. Anything under a 50", I presonally wouldnt bother. LCD on anything other than HD signals will not be as good Plasma imo. If you watch SD Digital (non HD Sky or Freeview) a lot, you will probably be disappointed with a large LCD screen.

All of the current 1080p crop of LCD's seem to have problems with certain areas with connectivity and picture quality. I would wait until issues are resolved on new models as technology for 1080p is changing with new releases over the summer.

Component cant manage 1080p because its not up to it - it needs HDMI or VGA.

I've got the Sony W series and love it, basically only difference from the X series is some different background processing, other than that its just cosmetics.

If upgrading from a 32" I'd stick with a 40 LCD - you'll probably find the picture on standard def quite stretched as it is at that size, but you'll certainly notice a massive difference.

From my own experience of HD from the 360 and the sky HD, I anything bigger than 40 and even 720p is getting towards it limits.

Scratch what I just said. roflol

Just read up on the latest Samsung 1080p panels. They seem the best at present (for all round capabilities). I think I might order one.
