Ipod stuck on Apple logo

Ipod stuck on Apple logo
I have a 20gig ipod, believe its a 2nd generation.
At the moment it is jst stuck with the apple logo on the screen. When i connect it to a PC it stays exactly the same, attery charging logo doesnt come on and computer doesnt recognise it.
Tried doing that reset thing where you hold the 2 buttons but it just switches off and the apple logo re appears.
Anyone have any ideas how i can get my computer to detect it, or a way to restore it.
Not bothered about recovering anything on it but im at a loss how to get it working.
