Ultra portable laptop? SOny Vaio?
Does anyone have a ultra portable laptop something with either a 13" or 14" screen, light weight with good battery life?
Sony C2S/H Intel Core 2 Duo T5500 1Gb 13.3" DVD±RW Vist
any good?
Are there any makes to avoid or ones that I should buy?
I have always had the regular Dell dimension laptops but my latest one about a year old with a 15.4" screen is too heavy to lug around on planes!

Sony support sucks so throw them away when they break. They are fairly cool though.
We just use HP NC2400, not ultra tiny but powerful enough to actually dow ork on.

I have got the same one as in your pic but in green and i think its really good.
It does all i ask of it, but is fairly expensive for what it is.
This is my firsat laptop so cant compare battery life with anything else.

i have an sz2xp 13" core duo 2ghz running vista business and my girlfriend has a sony tx57 11" core solo 1.3ghz also running vista business.
mine is a good desktop replacement (for business, not games), but hers is awesomely portable and the batt lasts up to 10hrs. mine 5.5hrs
we both have the bluetooth dongleless vaio mice too, so ultra cool.
i was desperate for a mac book pro, but i thought the build quality and screen wasn't as good as the vaio.
basically i want my vaio running osx lol
they're expensive, but there's a reason for it

deffinatly consider the sony sz series..they are up to sz4's now. They are very well built (out of carbon fibre I think) and have very good components.
Sony sell a 3 year on site warranty for about £200 if you would like a good warranty.
They also have the G series now which is seriously light and have an 8/9 hour battery.
Personally my favourite Ultra(ish) portable is the dell xps m1210. It essesntially a 12" desktop replacement.
The sony you have picked isn't bad, I just think they are a little slow when you use them.

I've got a Vaio SZ3XWP/C running Vista Ultimate and it's the best laptop I've had, extremely thin screen and very light and the battery is great too! Highly recommended!

I recently got a Dell Latitude D420 after reading the review in PcPro (it's on their 'A' list). See review here: PC Pro: Product Reviews: Dell Latitude D420
Excellent piece of kit and it's now only £720.

I'd have the Dell XPS M1210 for preformance while remaining very portable
or the vaio sz4 for the wight and battery while giving decent enough performance.
But consider it this way the best sz4 can't match the best M1210 and the dell will be cheaper. You can have a 7200rpm Hard Drive in the dell and a 2.33ghz cpu which are the selling points to me.

If weight is the critical issue then I'll add my vote for the D420. I've had one for the last few months and am very happy with it. It retains a full size laptop keyboard so it is easy to use.
The D420 does make some compromises - no built-in DVD/CD, slow hard disk,.. to get its weight down. For the usual office applications I have not felt it to be slow. I would not want to use it as my main PC though.
I have seen a M1210 and it looked very good, fewer performance compromises but heavier. I would probably have chosen this if I had needed a more everyday laptop.
I hope this is of some use.

the tx is underpowered for vista, you're quite right, but it's no toy. it's an ultra portable business machine.
it happily runs photoshop cs2 and filters are pretty quick too - it's not a toy by any means.
My girlfriend can put it in her handbag and use it whenever she wants with the confidence of not having to lug the power adapter around (charge overnight). it's really that portable
you'd be an idiot not to do your homework before buying a laptop anyway, but if you want ...
totally portable
a day's battery life
to process 30gigs of images in photoshop whilst on holiday
surf the net out and about (we have 3g broadband, so it really is anywhere)
play a dvd without switching on the laptop
this is for you.
it does not play doom 3 very well or rip dvds very fast.

hmm well i'll trust what you're saying as you've used it longer than me..but I thought it was painful to use. It's the hard drive more than anything..very slow to seek or do anything really.
I won't argue that the battery life is impressive..although the new g series vaio is better.

the drive is slow and by default set to battery saving, rather than performance in the bios. even then it's prolly still 5400.
suz's is quite quick as it's only 2 months old and not very fragg'd. i'll bet you have to keep up to date with the defragmentation tho.

Sorry, I don't have that. But I'd like to though.
