atm crt with 3 built-in speakers & subwoofer with 2 rear speakers connected by the older shoving the bare wires into the clip thingys...
at present have plugged the 3 component cables into the tv component sockets. So would this be doing 5.1 atm?

looking at the combined home cinema setup but think im getting my wires crossed as to where i would stick the wires, all 6 component wires into the tv or 5.1 box?

Just making sure i get something with the right in/out connectors

It wouldn't be doing any audio at all. The three component cables (red, blue and green) only carry video, not sound. Are you sure you're not mixing it up with composite which has a yellow video lead, and 2 audio leads (usually red & white). If so, then this will only (at best) be doing pro logic surround.

A component lead will usually have 3 video cables (rgb), 2 audio (left&right), and sometimes an optical lead for the audio 9if you get the right one). 5.1 surround sound is digital, so (I think) you need an optical connection to get it. On my setup, I've got the component video and optical audio going into my AV amp, and then onto the plasma.

Right so it sound slike you TV will take a decoded surround signal through a set of 6 phono's.

However, what you need is something that will decode that signal.

You need a TOSLINK optical cable to run from the 360 (out of the AV HD connector on the 360) to an AV amp.

You can then either hook the speakers up to the amp, or, bridge across with phono outs from the Amp into the TV, and then hook up the speakers to the TV.

I would SCART from the TV to the Amp. Speakers coming straight out of the Amp. Digital connections (Either TOSLINK or Digital Co-ax) From the 360 and DVD player/Sky box into the Amp.

probably, cant find the 360 manual to check. Yeah the HD component cable had 6 wires rgb & 2audio, what about the 6th? got the 2 audio in so its just doing stereo across the 6 speakers.

"I've got the component video and optical audio going into my AV amp, and then onto the plasma" - this is what im querying. For starters i'll be plugging the 6 component wires into the dvd all-in-1 (so itll need 6 component sockets) then say hdmi from dvd to tv?

there is another hole in the connector at the back of the xbox for an optical cable, if you had something for a PS2 that gave you 5.1 it's the same cable....

Here's how I would do it

Code:

  |----------------TV ----------------|
  | | |
  | | SKY |
  | (HDMI) | / | (Component or VGA)
  | | / (SCART) |
  | | / |
DVD----------------AMP-------------- 360
          (TOSLINK) | (TOSLINK)
                    |
                    |
                    |(PHONO)
                    |
                    |
                  SPEAKERS

cheers for that. Was planning on going the all-in-1 route (dvd amp) rather than a big seperate amp. is phono/rca speaker connections the same? I guess they are a hell of a lot better than clip-ins that these home cinema setups use.

you can tell i havent looked at these things in a long time

What you need to find out is whether the DVD Amp all in one thingy you are going for has "optical in". If it does, all well and good. If it doesn't then you need an Amp.

What Pete said

btw, why go for an all in one thing? never liked them myself. If the dvd player goes wrong you end up throwing away the amp as well, and the sound quality is never as good as a proper amp imo, (mainly because the components etc are so packed together to fit into a dvd player sized box).

ok given the tread so far do you really think im capable of making a decision as to which amp is best then which speakers are best and would they go well together im trying to make it as easy as possible for myself.
As with technology you're always waiting to see whats round the corner....."hmm im sure ive been round this corner many times before... "

and anyways ive been told by the missus to "just buy the damn thing"
