Default Virgin Medai / NTL / Telewest Internet users !

As of the 1st of May everyone is restricted by traffic shaping !

If you break the download limit between 4pm and 12pm you get a 4 hour half speed time out !!

Detailed here

Traffic management

Strangely though in the FAQ on the site it states:

Q: Is it true that downloads will be capped?
A: Our cable services are not capped and there are no intentions to introduce any usage limits - these are unlimited.

Frequently asked questions - Help - Virgin Media

So please please please dont take this out on the Broadband support its not their fault, complaints to customer relations Dep !!

Is this because of the upgrade to the speeds?

My 8mb Virgin ADSL is whank anyway - I get 1.5 if i'm lucky - sometimes it's so slow dial up would be faster.

Virgin's ADSL is ****, even their helpdesk agree - their backbone can't cope with demand - and that was before they merged.

'Thanks for making us No1 broadband supplier' - yeah right - thanks for making my Broadband so **** its next to unusable.

I was at my parents last night and went to download MOTD2. The speed was terrible and now I know why. They're going to get a lot of complaints regarding this.

Even if it gets throttled to 1mb, it'll still be faster than the adsl service I can get in Swindon !!!

Whenever I download anything with my NTL connection, I consistently get between 9-10mb (obviously depending on the server I'm downloading from). I don't tend to use it for much other than a bit of online gaming and web browsing though.

Does this apply just to the ADSL service, or does it apply to cable users as well ? Pretty dire news if it is ...

I assumed cable as well, (seeing as the monitoring is lumped in together with the statements about the 20mb broadband upgrades).

Maybe you're lucky then. I was using a torrent of Match of the Day 2 which would normally max out the connection due to the number of people seeding. Only saw 200k\s on a 10meg line at about 7pm last night.

My internet is absolutely crap with virgin. as soon as my contract is up im going to change to sky straght away. I'm fed up with the crap customer services who have fobbed me off so many times just telling me theres a problem and there working on it.. they've supposidly been doing this since before christmas. i get between 1/5th and 1/10th of the connection i'm meant to get.
I have no idea why virgin let telewest use there name after the buy out. That was a really big image damaging move.

I'm not sure ADSL side but the cable side is defo affected, and yes it is becuase of the speed increase, they claim 5% of the users are causing slow speeds for the rest and this will stop that, but it becuase the network can't handle the 20mb jump.

I'm supposed to have 10mb but never get anything above 3mb which isn;t much improvement on my previous 2mb. Just keep getting fobbed off by broadband support saying that there may be issues and when i do finally start tp get 10mb, ring them back and see if i can get a discount for the time i only had 3mb.

Getting p!ssed off with it now, can;t be bothered keep phoning up to be told there is no resolution!

What is the point of having a 20mb service if you cannot actually use it at the time you want. Ridiculous.

Apologies if I'm telling you stuff you already know, but you have tried connecting using your ethernet cable rather than your USB? I had exactly the same problem when I switched to 10mb, and as soon as I switched to the Ethernet cable, I got the full speed.

I have allways had it connected via ethernet since the day it was installed. I suspected it might be becaise i have an old motorola surfboard modem, but tech support said it should be fine.. to be honest the people in broadband support seem to be just winging the calls and trying to appease me and get me off the phone

Unless its the 3100 it will support 10mb

BBI support have just had an update to the "rules" they follow, they have to aim for 620 seconds per call ! Its gone down quite a bit, so as much as they want to help you, if they dont push for the call to end, they dont get their bonuses !!

and yes it SUCKS major ***

Funny that explains the slow down yesterday thought it was all the spotty oiks on holiday playing metal gear solid on line (or whatever).
Strange to say i have just moved my pc a couple of weeks ago and had a virgin bloke round to fix a dead modem and he gave me a big length of ethernet cable for free so i bought a cheap card as he said it was a better connection, so it aint my usb connection either.

This does pee me of because although i have always paid abit more than the usual amount i was happy in the knowledge i was getting an unlimited connection.

i was just on the phone to virgin and they have said "the traffic management only comes into force once the 20gig speeds are introduced ?" but i only have 3mb download speeds at the moment so go figure ??

I've just tried the speed tests, and I'm only getting 1mb on a 10mb connection this evening. It's not been turned on all day either, so I know I've not used up any bandwidth...

Ditto here Iain - speedtest.net to London reports between 1 and 1.5Mbps on a 10Mb connection, which is confirmed by a multithreaded download from Newshosting (that I can normally max out) - again circa 1.5Mbps.... don't know WTF is going on here.... but as you mentioned before, not really any other option (especially if you're on Blunsdon exchange!)

Not massively happy at the moment, but will see how it pans out over the next few days - as it could just be teething issues I guess....

Results from Swindon on 10Mb...

Even when shaping cuts in, it should just drop the speed to 5Mbs.... not 1 FFS!!!
