Default Upgrading a computers memory

My computer is currently running with a lowly 512mb and i'm looking to carry out an upgrade. I see that it has 4 slots for 184 pin DIMM RAM, 2 of which are currently occupied with 256mb modules. If i get a 1gb stick can it go in any of the 4 slots, or will i be better off to spend a bit more and pick up 2 1gb modules and remove the original 512mb (My OS will only recognise a maximum of 2gb).

It depends on your motherboard really. You will have to either go on the manufactures website (if you dont have the original manual that came with the mobo) to see what memory you can put in a slot, some older boards may not recognise a 1gb stick.

Just used the scanner and it seems i can use a 1GB stick. It doesn't seem to say which of the 4 slots it's best to go in though so i guess any would be ok?

Correct. Although slot 1 is usually the best place for one dimm

It really depends on your motherboard. To get the benefits of dual channel you sometimes have to put the memory in specific slots. These can be colour coded or maybe slots 1 & 3 or slots 1 & 2.
It all depends on the motherboard.
