Default Building a top 'quality' PC

Ok Guys/Gals,

I have tinkered about building PC's before but generally not totally from the ground up using bought generic products with not much thought about manufactruers etc..... Recently thought may be components that make up a PC i.e. mobo, memory, hdd etc may be a bit like cars i.e. some manufacturers are better than others. Then I started thinking if that is the case, how better a result can you get by using "quality" items ??

So I am considering building a topflight PC from the ground up. Any sites that are good to look at regarding components ? Is Novatech unbranded memory for instance the same, worse, better than branded memory ?

Whose considered the DADDY of mobos ?

Any advice welcome, even if its don't bother buy one off the shelf from xyz manufacturer
