If its a built in wireless on the laptop yes, the windows will be better, and it only says that whilst you have the other software active.

Another option is to change the channel as it might be someone elses network or even a wireless door bell causing the issue.

I'd make a note of network key, remove software, start up windows wireless and connect, enter key and see if it stays connected.. oh change the channel, if you get the same issue take it back..

aye, the Belkins I've used were very ticky with encryption, if you can exchange it, these 2 IMO are far better routers:

Broadbandbuyer.co.uk | Netgear WGR614 v6 54Mbps Broadband Wireless Router

Broadbandbuyer.co.uk | Linksys WRT54GL 54Mbps Broadband Wireless-G Linux Router

make sure the linksys is the GL version if you want that one. From a relaibility point of view the ADSL linksys routers are hit and miss but I've heard great things about the GL model, Netgear one should be sound

equipment permitting.....WPA provides far greater security than WEP so if possible use WPA with a long password

link to make random password is here

WPA-PSK Key Generator | Kurt's Website

see how it goes first with the windows software but WPA i would strongly recommend

In theory the ADSL and the cable are the same equipment, only one contains an ADSL modem.. and the other a ethernet connection.. I like Netgear myself, always found them to be a better router.. Good advice

Sure, but the ADSL Linksys routers were known to have ticky firmware with ADSL and only just recently has this apparently been solved, the problems were wireless loosing settings and dropping out. Cable ones, some have less RAM (G model to cut costs) wheras the prementioned one has 16 Meg of RAM and allows you to flash the firmware with 3rd party firmwares giving more features

I could never get Belkin kit to work consistently.

I use Netgear now - costs more but works ALL the time

Just check that your network it not trying to connect to another "limited" network first. By default XP will try to bridge multiple networks in order not to effect the "end user experience" (pile of tosh if you ask me).

The only easy way of explaining it is - locate your network settings and configure the advanced settings. (Wireless properties - Networks to access).
