DNS gurus...
Just doing my DNS revision for the 70-291 exam on Tuesday and while I understand the differences between an iterative and recursive request what I want to know is at what point is it determined which process is used. I have just put the rest of the team into confusion asking them this, all being MCSE's at a minimum, checked google and nowhere seems to be able to give a clear explanation at what point which process is used ie whether the request is recursive, the dns server initially asked goes off and asks other dns servers and comes back to the client making the request, or its an iterative request when the initial dns server says I don't know the answer so go and ask this dns server here.
So when does the dns server being queried by the client decide to do a recursive and go and find out the answer or decide to do an iterative and passes the clients request onto a root server?

The client decides rather than the DNS server. I think pretty much all clients send RD (recursion desired) requests, but you need permission on the DNS server side to do that.
Recursive lookups are costly in both memory (cache) and CPU, so you don't want everyone making them.

Thanks for your reply but I believe that to be incorrect in respect of Windows clients and servers. From the exam cram I am reading it certainly doesn't state that as the case and nor does the Microsoft course material. There is a section on where it says the dns server which receives the clients request will go and get the answer if it doesn't know it throguh zone or cache info if it is configured with dns forwarders so becomes a recursive request otherwise if there are no forwarding dns servers it sends the request to a root server in which case its an iterative request. I am assuming this is the answer but its still not 100% clear because its not clearly stated this is how its decided whether a recursive request is used or an iterative request is used.

You may be correct, I don't know what goes on inside an MS DNS server specifically, I just know the RFC
I would be interested to know if you find out though.

Thanks but unfortunately I failed it this morning by one question Now got to decide whether I do the sensible thing and retake it quickly or continue to have the right ar$e over it and not bother for a month or two. Supposed to be doing the exchange one next week but going to delay it now as I wanted to get MCSA by the end of March and thats gone out the window now by one bloody question.
Thanks for that link David, think i'll read up a fair bit off the website as the exam cram and course material didn't do me much good for the exam questions.

Cheers David, i've already emailed my boss and his boss saying I want to do it ASAP (the company is supposed to be paying for it), no point sulking about it past this afternoon! Can't believe it was the DNS that I got the lowest marks on and got my best scores on ip address management and remote access server as I found them the hardest when revising I got over 75% on each section apart from DNS which was well below 50% and basically failed the exam.

That would be great, cheers David, as the exam cram book for 291 wasn't as thorough as the ones for 290 and 270 which I got 90% and 81% in so need some more material. I also think the biggest issue was the wording of the questions as half of them were so confusing. I was answering all the test questions right in the exam cram but the real exam questions were 100 times harder to understand what they were asking. I hate Microsoft wording.
My bosses boss has already come over to me this morning saying give him the invoice and its sorted so basically can take it whenever I want just want to get it done and over with as I stress myself out alot over exams and until its passed I can't relax
Manage to book a retake and swap it for my Exchange one next Thursday so back to the books.
