Does anyone know how to gain access to a password protected word doc that has been protected from being opened?

Yes, there is a way to recover a lost or forgotten password in an MS
Word document. Check Google for password recovery tools.

You can download a simple tool from the web:

http://www.intertek.org.uk/downloads/word.html

but you may have to stump up some readies

It could be possible to change the extension to '.txt' and get a somewhat garbled file with the text in it (but no formatting etc.)?

I was actually looking into this last night for him.. it would seem saving it as rtf and then back to doc removes the protection, but I couldn't quite get it right
