Default Establishing what broadband speed?

I’m trying to establish what speed Broadband Internet connection I’m on.

Sorry if the description is a bit basic but here goes,
When I Right click on the two little computers talking to each other (Right hand side bottom of the screen) and go status, it says Speed: 1.1 Mbps.

What exactly is rated at 1.1Mbps?
The max line speed governed by the exchange servers? The max line speed governed by the length of line from the exchange? Or the max connection speed of my modem?

From the ThinkBroadband speed test I know the Genuine speed is 240Kbps (Crap I know!!) but it always was 240Kbps anyway before my “upgrade”.
The reason I ask is Tiscali have promised they have up’d my speed from 1/2Mb to 1Mb. They may well have done this, but I’m thinking it may not be possible to go any higher.

Thanks in advance for any pointers, Carl

speedtest.com

That will give you your 'true' download/upload speed

Thanks Jowl – but I already know what the ‘true’ download speed is (see above) -
I’m trying to establish which supposed speed service I’m connected up to and if its worth me asking for a higher speed or not due to whatever’s limiting my line speed.

Carl

Are you connected dirctly to the modem, rather than to a wireless or wired router?

If so are you using an Ethernet or USB connection?

240kbps is quarter speed, you should be getting 1000kbps on a 1mb connection. Trouble is do they state UP TO 1mb?

Yes, like everything theres no guarantee of full speed, however, as you say its well short of the mark.

What I’m trying to understand is:
1 - Whether or not I’m connected to 1Mb? and if so,
2 - Is it Tiscali’s servers fault that I’m not getting anywhere near.

Like I said, was on 1/2Mb connection with real speed of 240Kbps, then supposedly upgraded to 1Mb but still getting 240Kbps. If I ask for 2Mb – what do you rekon it will be? 240Kbps is my guess!!!
