I don't think the PS3 is particularly overpriced, nor the 360. However, I do think the price of games for consoles is outrageously high.
It really does take the p1ss.

Not sure about that. Obvilion (for example) cost £40. I got just over 100 hours of gameplay out of it which works out at about 40p an hour. Show me where you can see a film (or do anything else) for that small amount of money. Even a smaller game with 20 hours of gameplay only works out at £2 an hour, (still cheaper than the cinema or the pub).

Yeah but Iain you confess you get bored after an hour with most games
I'm with you though, if a game has good replay value as well all the better.

All ordered by people wanting to make a fast buck on Ebay !
Why bother when its no better than the 360 ?
Still want a Wii and no bugger has them in stock, almost two months since Christmas.

No denying the huge installed user base for Playstation. Its this that's contributed to the big pre-orders. That aside, I'd say both machines have similar levels of hype otherwise.
Given that Microsoft make more than 10x the profit Sony do, and that PS3 sales haven't been as expected*, I bet Sony are praying European sales fair better. In addition, MS is about to revise the Xbox360 manufacture to increase profit per unit.
*Japanese retailers discounting PS3
*US sales slower than expected. High levels of stock unsold.

I have a PS3 on preorder (also have 360) not so much for the games but for the Blue Ray capability. Sure I'll use it for gamming but having gamming and a BR player swings it. Tis a similar price to a 360 once you add the HD DVD drive.
Just IMO of course

I'll get one when their readily available in the shops with a game or 2 thrown in - and I'll be straight for on when MGS4, GT5, Killzone or Ratchet & Clank get a release...
Mainly want one for Blu-Ray, and Sony are releasing Casino Royale next month - wonder if that could be the freebie disc?
I'm normally a Sony geek - but I'll be too heavily into GRAW 2 next month...

May be wrong but i though i saw somewhere that the PS3 couldn't upscale to 1080?, or was that the only on the games?.
Also Play didn't have many pre-orders for the 360 in the end because they couldn't deliver so loads cancelled.
And to think they'll meet the pre-orders, all of them. Pah

If you want the PS3 just for the Blue Ray playback it becomes quite good value for money. Especially as the Samsung Blue Ray player is £900.

See here 720p PS3 games downscale on older HD sets [update 1] - Joystiq
Also the ps3 won't upscale older games or DVDs like the 360 does. Microsoft recently revealed that the 360 has a hardware scaler which is why the 360 can output any format. Seems sony missed that trick.

I think what will win the competition is the reliablity of the console!!
given that a 360 costs anywhere between £279 for 12 months use, or £339
if you take out the extended warranty
as opposed to anywhere between 279 - 599 if you dont take the warranty,
and you have 4 duff units after that (outside the 3 month warranty)
it adds up
if the PS3 at £425 has longevity, then it may get some good press..
saying that, why the f*ck do they think upping the game price everytime they launch a new console is acceptable??
(ask nintendo, they started it!!!)

I heard that casino royale is getting thrown in for the first 500000 customers, which by all accounts are the 1st of the preorders!!!!

outside the 3 month warranty
Unless you lived in the states but that has now been extended to 12 months and afaik refunds given for anyone who paid for the repair within that period.
