Question Please explain processors

Hi there, just looking at the Intel ones on Overclockers, full list here, but what are teh advantages of different ones, and is the speed the thing to go by (am I right in thinking the 'speed is the one in GHz (2.8GHZ?) what I was wondering is this:
  • if you had a core 2 duo at 2.0GHz, is that two, 2.0GHz cores = 4.0GHz?
  • why are the pentium 4 ones at the bottom, cheaper, but with a higher speed rating?
  • Why is there a 3.3GHz at under £40, and then a 1.8GHz at over £100?
Thanks for any answers, as I don't really understand how processors work.

Scott.

GHz is the clock speed of the cpu. You can only use it to measure performance within its cpu family.

Your dual core question, yes it is 2x 2GHz cores. No it will not be equal to a single core chip of the same design running at 4GHz. It can be pretty close to it for applications that can make use of multi cores... Explanations on this can go on forever...

If you want comparative benchmarks, try sites like tomshardware for reviews etc..

If you are after an Intel cpu, go for the Core Duo's. It will kick the **** of all the other cpu's in its price bracket currently for most tasks.

Missed the other questions.

Pentium 4's are old technology. Per clock cycle, the newer core duo's can process more...

I'm keeping it simple as its some stupid o'clock..
