Hey up,
Quick question,
bought some cheap hosting from ebay while I learn about setting a site up etc.

Recently I keep loosing connection while using my ftp and when this happens I cant connect to my sites or there control pannel. Other web sites load OK while this is happening. If I wait a couple on minutes it all comes back.
I asked my provider if they had problems to which they replied none.

I have tried all the disable AV / firewall / router etc but this still is happening.

Is there any other tricks to see if it is the hosting or something I am doing that is causing the loss of service?

I'm betting on "cheap hosting"

Try using ftp to your site from two or three other internet connections (work/friends). Soon find out where the problem is.
