Question Unable to see workgroup computers from XP machine

Need your help please guys, this is driving me nuts now

Here's the setup;

1. Laptop running XP Home
2. PC running Win2K Pro
3. Server running 2000 server

I have a router with built in ADSL modem and 4 port switch which provides my internet access.

The PC and Server are directly connected to the router via ethernet cables, I have a WAP directly connected via ethernet and there is also a print server directly connect via ethernet (don't think this is relevant but just so you have exact details of my setup).

So the laptop connects wirelessly via the WAP and is able to access the interenet just fine, I can also ping both the PC and Server via IP and machine name and vice versa.

If I open My Network Places on the Laptop the only entry is 'My Web Sites on MSN' neither the PC or Server are shown. If I go into My Network Places on the PC and then into Computers Near Me all 3 are shown and are accessible, the same applies on the Server.

All 3 machines are configured with the same workgroup name, all machines have manually assigned IP in the 192.168.7.x range and all are set to use the router as default gateway and DNS server, the firewall is switched off on the Laptop and I have tried it directly connected via ethernet cable too.

1 last thing, on the laptop if I open Windows Explorer and enter \\'machine name of the server' I can access the Printers and Faxes folder on the Server. If I then try and access a shared folder on the server using the same technique \\'machine name of the server'\'shared folder name' I get a cannot find error.

All I want to be able to do is have the laptop access 1 shared folder on the Server which the PC is able to do just fine, any ideas?

'nbtstat -a <ip-address>' results for all 3 machines may give a clue?

To confirm; you can access the laptop from the server and PC, but not visa-versa?

NetBIOS is all working OK then. Not that familiar with XP, but I'd guess it'll be related to 'simple file sharing' or whatever it's called; switch it off, from control panel somewhere I think.

The only other thing to consider is authentication required to access shares on the W2K server/ws. But this should only stop you accessing the shares, not viewing them from explorer (ie; \\server_name should show all available shared devices on the box, unless you have screwed down security somewhat).

You can't turn off simple file sharing in XP home

Security settings are standard on the Server

Sh*t life Google it, must be a way of activating it. Otherwise enable FTP server on the server and use a GUI based FTP client on XP Home?
