Default WMV converter (xbox 360)

need a good converter that can give me good resolution in WMV.. What I'm trying to do is use my USB HDD to play films via the 360, and as the 360 can only play WMV files I have to converter everything to that, but when I converter anything to WMV I get a crappy resolution (when I play them via the 360 I just get a little screen), I need something that will convert it to the full res..

any recommendation will be great.. cheers

Depends on your display and the source file resolution really. I currently have a file converting to 1280x720 (720p), the source is 1280x544.

Have a browse on the forum for some good advice

The currently best and fastest way is using VLC command line as described here: How-To: Transcode & stream videos on Xbox 360 - Joystiq

I'm currently using AutoMKV it's free and despite the name it does conversion from DVD or most other video formats to WMV-7 WMV-8 WMV-9 or the new WMV-VC1 (WVC) codec.

Loads of different setting for resizing, audio etc although i havn't explored these yet.

I use DVDX it converts DVD files into WMV no problem. Usually takes around 4 hours for a 720 x 576 (straight) conversion and a bit longer if you want to change the resolution. Its free too.

According to the specs it appears to support MKV as an output but not an input. Not tried it yet though.

I'd give it ago, it seems to support a lot of formats not listed, I don't even think it list WMV as a supported output but has plenty of different profiles built in for different versions.
Theres a support forum at doom9.org and the developer contributes regulary and is pretty quick at incorperating suggestions into the build , so if theres no support he may be able to help you out. you'll need to download WMP11 or WME9 i believe for it to work..

All I'm after is to play a avi file that at source is 588x240 from my external HDD through the 360 onto my TV, tried encode360 and looking in the forums it can take up to 16 hours to convert, plus it keeps crashing why is it if I burn that same file as a DVD and play it through the 360 it looks perfect, but if I try and convert it to WMV then play it via the 360 I can never get the res right and its just a little box in a big screen..

Should I be looking to up scale it from 588x240 to 1280x720 or is that impossible with WMV converts? or can I get away with a small res that will still fill the screen..
