network 2 computers

network 2 computers
How easy is it to network 2 computers with a cross over cable both computers are windows xp. This is for a mate who dont want to buy a router just wants to use standard usb modem supplied by service provider.

Yep.
On the pc with the internet runing.
Open start menu->connect to->show all connections> right click your internet connection->properties->click the advanced tab at the top of new pop up-> internet connection sharing make sure the 3 box's are ticked makes it easyer then click ok.
Now on the other pc.
Open start menu->connect to->show all connections> right click the connection you have pluged the crossover cable in to then click properties-> click on internet protocol (tcp/ip) then click the properties button make sure you click the obtain an ip address automatically.
Now if your using sp2 you will have windows fire wall so open up that in controle panel to make sure file and printer sharing is ticked and that should get you on line.
