WIFI network help please..
Can anyone advise me on this problem...
I have a WI FI enable laptop that I use at home on our wireless router which I have set up. The router athome is connected to the main desktop pc and all is good.
At my girlfriends house they also have a wireless network and router. This it is a linksys one. They have their router free standing however and the desktop connects to it via a USB linksys wifi adaptor.
My laptop finds their network and I have the pass key however it never actually manages to work correctly. It says conncted but always says limited or no connectivity as the network didnt assign a network key.
I can tell it is not right as the details in the properties for the network are either black or 00.000.000. etc
When I right click the the properties on their desktop which does work it says indos annot configure this wireless network configuration" if you have used another program to set it up then use that. Or words to that effect..
Basically I want to be able to just connect my laptop to their wireless network whilst here.
Any ideas please?
Liam

it says on my laptop connected but then says "you might not be able to connect to the internet because the network did not assign a network address to the computer" or something very similar.

Is your own router set to give out a dhcp ip address when you connect, and your girlfriends not, or the other way round
Also have you tried manually setting up a connection to your girlfriends wireless, and checked the settings on her router on what security it is using?

This may or may not help, but I got the 'limited connectivity' message recently when attempting to connect a laptop to my home wifi network, despite all the security details being correct.
It turns out that I had to enter the WEP security key using hexadecimal values, i.e. the encrypted key generated from whatever text you enter as the security key.
I found out that this is an issue with some hardware.
Does the router have MAC address filtering and if so, has your laptop wifi adapter been added?

This could be because Windows controls the wireless network settings , not a third party utility

log onto their router from one of their machines, go to the wireless settings, there will be a subsection to control the mac filtering.
edited to say :
If this is enabled, add your laptops wireless mac address...to find this..
run command prompt on yours, put in ipconfig. read off the "physical address" parameters for your wireless adaptor. it will look like 00-12-85-89-XX-XX
add an entry to the allowed list using those characters...but in format 00:12:85:89:xx:xx
remember to SAVE before exiting the page

to log into the router...do it from their pc.
if unsure of the routers ip address, run the command prompt from thier pc, type in ipconfig/all ... you will see the gateway ip address ..
something like 192.168.x.x
this will be the ip of the router.
use a internet explorer...on the address bar.. type in 192.168.x.x
this will take you to the router login prompt.
if left as defaults.. username will be admin, password may be password
