can you play consoles on a plasma screen?
hi all
im looking to buy a new tv and feel lost with all this new technology ! buying a tv used to be so simple lol
im also hoping to get a 360 as well but someone told me that i would need an lcd screen if i wanted to play a console on it as it would damage a plasma?
any help to set me straight is much appreciated
thanks ian

I suspect that they were pulling your leg. There's no reason why a console video signal should be any worse than that of say a DVD player.
As GC8 says, plasmas are prone to 'burn in' but unless you have something bright on the same part of the screen for extended periods of time you should be alright.

Well I've been using a 42" Panasonic plasma for about 2.5 years with my consoles. I ran an xbox through it for a year, (as well as a PS2), and have run a 360 through it since they were released just over a year ago.
No problems with the screen at all. There were some problems with burn-in on the very first screens (mostly the cheaper ones), but that's pretty much non-existent now...

That's what I've got. It's not hi-def (too old), but I've been very pleased with it. Would definitely consider another when I upgrade a bit later this year...

I have been using a plasma for the last 3 years - no problem at all.
I would go so far as to say that if you are spending a grand or so, you are going to get far more bang for your buck from a HD plasma than an LCD - The contrast ratio is going to be much higher, the response rate much lower and much better brightness levels - at this price point.
Of course the downside is that they weigh a ton, but were I to buy a new screen tomorrow for a grand I wouldn't touch an LCD over a plamsa.

I've just bought a 42" plasma viera. Mine is HD and I've been using with my 360, Wii, DVD and Sky.
Brilliant
Can't say I've noticed that it weighs a lot (especialy over my 28" CRT it replaced!!) - the pedastal weighed more tbh!!
Despite the information regarding burn in, I still don't leave it one screen for too long, just in case.
The was a story on AV forums of somebody leaving a Noddy DVD menu up for a few hours, and it temporarily resulted in some burn in. However, after turning off for the night, it seemed to be OK next morning.
Obviously just one case, but I don't think it's the issue it used to be, although, you should still take care!

I've never had any probs with my Panny PWD6. IMHO this is another folks tale from back in the early days of plasma - run it in right now and the modern ones are all good

The games you need to watch are things like PGR, or GT or anything that has a status bar or dials in a fixed position throughout the game. My plasma leaves ghost image of, say, the car dials when playng PGR etc. However, unless you leav eit there for several days, it's not going to be permanent burn-in, switch over to the tv so that the area in question ets a work out with moving images/colour, and the ghost image disappears in a few seconds.

Same as mine, and it also has a 'Screen Wipe' feature whch is basically a plain white screen that gets displayed for x period of time to clear any burn that may ahve been generated.

My, now almost 6 yr old, Pioneer Plasma is still going strong. Used for X-Box, now 360 plus usual hours of TV and DVD watching plus occasional PC use. Not true HD but does display 720p from the 360 and it looks great.
Light to at 38kg compared with my old 36" CRT at 78kg!

My Panny PWD6 accepts a HD 720p signal (and 1080i), even though it's not HD. It does some clever voodoo on the signal to display it on the screen, and even though it's not the full HD image, it looks one helluva lot better than low-def, (and not much different to hi-def unless you get close and look).
Apart froma general lack of money, that's the main reason I haven't upgraded yet. It still looks good

I for one will not upgrade until it dies. My mate has a new Pioneer 43" that cost over 2k and neither of us can tell the difference between picture from a 360 set on 720p.

Almost, silly thing is it doesn't support 576p which wasn't a problem when I got it as Progessive PAL was still a twinkle in DVD player eyes. Now it's a real pain.
