You can get wireless access thru a roof mounted aeriel and via satellite, if cable is unavailable. Both come at a premium though.

NTL aren't fitted to the flats I want internet at, it was never plumbed in so they won't come fit it now.

Pity,

DSL prices are anywhere from free to £40 or more / mnth depending on your requirements, usage, need of a decent provider etc.

We have a WiMAX classed wireless service in Kent, unfortunately the provider I was with went bust... but a new provider has bought up the network and now offers faster services.

Not as cheap as ADSL, but if you live in the sticks its better than being stuck on 1mb or less ADSL. The provider is called Vfast, offer 2, 4, and 8mb service with 2mb costing £25 and 8mb costing £37, not too bad when you consider the speed is both up and down speeds Also theres no bandwidth restriction.

Downside is it costs £350 to get installed, thankfully I have the equipment already installed from the previous provider and just needs to be reactived when then stabilise the network in our area.

As for stability and pings, I never had any probs and was always connected. Pings were around 25ms.

Hello

Depending on where you live you can get a wireless connection (as above), although you do need some equipment and you may not be able to install it if you are in a flat as they are typically roof mounted.

On the plus side, if you are in a block of flats you can probably steal someone elses connection whilst you are waiting for BT to activate your line. This is illegal.

Another option is a Tmobile Web N Walk Data card. A colleague was raving about it being faster than the Vodafone 3G card.

Details:

BT may ultimately the most cost effective route though.
