Default why is my internet so slooooowwwww

Just done a speed test from this site, after putting up with really slow download speeds over the last week or so

SpeedGuide.net :: Your Guide to Broadband came up with this result:

128 kbps down (~0.13 Mbps, 16 KB/s) ↓
193 kbps up (~0.19 Mbps, 24 KB/s) ↑

Details: 250 KB downloaded in 15.969 seconds
100 KB uploaded in 4.25 seconds
Speed @ 6% of the average for co.uk
2 times faster than 56k dialup

That's crap isn't it! Any ideas? I've done an ad aware sweep, with got rid of a few nasties, but it's still slow. I've got good anti virus, so I cant see it being that
Any help appreciated

Who's your ISP? I've noticed that just recently mine has been slow, as has a friends who uses the same ISP, but through a different exchange.
Both with BT
Both were quoted roughly 2M (quite a distance from the exchange)
Both getting roughly 125-200kb Download
Both getting roughly 275-375kb Upload

7335 kbps down (~7.34 Mbps, 895 KB/s) ↓
11547 kbps up (~11.55 Mbps, 1409 KB/s) ↑

I disagree bioforger, they have until recently, been very good, and the customer service has always been second to none. Still, if things don't improve, maybe time to move to orange or sky.

What speed are you supposed to be connected at ? Is this for up to 8 meg ADSL? Or a lower package?

How far are you from the exchange? What are your noise ratios?

2meg broadband basic package.
About 3 miles as the crow flies.
No idea

Bioforger, I don't understand your question? What has what I do on the internet got to do with anything?

I think he means if you download things, use torrents etc as torrents can have a big impact on your speeds

If you just surf and use email then even basic 512Mb adsl is more than adequate and you wouldnt notice much difference on higher speeds

Chris

when you say you dont use torrents all the time, do you actually shut down the software, or leave it running but not downloading anything

as anything you have in your 'shared' folder people can still download from you, causing your bandwidth to seemingly be cr@p

happens to me sometimes as I forget emule etc is still running in the tasktray
