So here is an obscure one...
if I have Parallels running on Mac OS and load Win XP will I then within the Virtual Machine be able to update XP to XP SP2?
Or do I need to start with XP SP2?

Dont know about parallels, but if it was like any other virtual pc like Vmware etc, then I cant see a problem being able to update XP to SP2
Might be easier to install it with the SP2 to start with

David,
for parallels XP is fine. If I decide to go with Bootcamp I will need an SP2 CD.
At least that is what I understand. I am sure Markus will be along in a few seconds to confirm.

Isnt there problems with somethings on a slipstream cd ?
Personally I find them a means to an end, you can't beat just burning a vlk cd from the MS DVD's

For completeness' sake I'll chime in
For BootCamp the bootable install media must contain XP SP2. If you have a CD with SP0 or SP1 on it and access to a PC then you can create a slipstreamed cd which will get you to SP2. This is the guide I used to create a bootable XP SP2 cd. The only problem I had with slipstreaming was getting the thing to be bootable, I had to download some boot file from somewhere, plus I had to ship the ISO over to my Mac as the PC does not have a cd burner in it.Apart from that it was pretty easy.
To be honest, the best thing would be to obtain an official XP SP2 CD, and I think MS might ship them out, or you could no doubt download one from bit torrent, just make sure the key you have, which of course will be a legally purchased key, works with the version of XP you have, eg; a Pro key won't work with a vlk (volume licence key) disk.
Parallels does not require SP2 and you could happily install SP0 and then upgrade it to SP2.
One thing you might want to consider is that the curent version of Parallels (build 3094 I think) does allow you to use your BootCamp partition as the "virtual hard drive", thus allowing you to use the same XP install for both BootCamp and Parallels, which is nice.
One other suggestion I have is to grab the latest full and update versions ofautopatcher. This combines all but the most recent windows updates into one big package, thus preventing you having to sit around whilst windows downloads, installs and then prompts you to reboot every now and then. I use it both for my VM setups and my "real" pc's, saves a lot of time, plus, it also means you don't have to connect the new machine to the internet without it being patched to pretty much the latest level.
an XP Pro vkl would be nice (got the media, need a valid key for validation)

nlite can make the cd bootable with its make iso feature, something else worth a look
RyanVM's MSFN Files Page
that will add updates onto the xp cd, however to keep it up to date you'd need reburning a cd so autpatcher may be the best bet there
Windows Updates Downloader
above is another tool for updates
