Default Wireless router not connecting

I have just signed up with sky and recieved the Netgear wireless router.
I am on the boarder of being computer illiterate so need help.
My laptop is an Acer travelmate 4020 wireless enabled and should be ready to go.
Using a yellow wire from the router to laptop i get connected but when i take out this wire it wont connect wireless
Sky staff advised me that installation basically consisted of connecting the roter to laptop using the yellow wire and when the wire it taken out it will automatically find my laptop, process complete? They are almost as useless as i am.
The wireless icon is constantly swapping from connected to not connected and says "aquiring address".

Any ideas please.

Right click on the Wireless icon in the taskbar and select "View available wireless networks"

Find your one from the list it shows and click Connect.

Might just be that you're trying to connect to a neighbours network by mistake?

Start from scratch.

try the following

disable wireless on your lappy (just to check the router)

plug router into telpoint at wall.

Connect via ethernet cable to lappy.

turn on router turn on lappy

install software.

confirm router has aquired Line, and is functioning...

open a browser window and type 192.168.0.1

if it connects via ehternet cable, then chances are router is ok....

then enable wirless settings on the router... once you confirm the wirless is running on the router, unplug the ethernet cable, and reenable the wireles on the lappy.

see if the lappy and the router connect. type 192.168.0.1

It may be the lappy is trying to aquire the router wirelessly, but you may all ready be connected via ethernet, hence the above
