Depends on what motherboard your PSP has!!!!

have a read of this PSP Downloads | Easy 2.80 Downgrader

if your unsure about this dont do it or your PSP will become an expensive paperweight

Definitely, be careful when downgrading. I wouldn't take the risk with my PSP.

1 in 10 PSPs will get bricked - it happens - even people who have just bought a psp and need to upgrade there firmware to say play ISS 6 can get there PSP bricked - for example if the battery comes loose during the update then its game over

If you read up right it wont happen

Proof of life (for cursed motherboards): TA-082 OE-A video - PlayStation Portable News - PSP Updates

there is now a 2.8 downgrader that works on the doomed motherboards. As for Bricking well it's a chance you take but the risk is fairly low if you follow the read-me to the letter. I went all the way to 2.00 then back to 1.5 upto 2.71 so I could pay loco-roco and now using the 3.02 OE-B custom firware.

Agrea with the bit about the battery but remember any up / downgrading has to be done with the psp powered with the mains adapter plugged in as well - does it not ??!!

but yep must admitt to being slightly nervous when I did my sons a year or so ago but as has been pointed out if you do everything by the book its actually very easy to do and if its is brand new am sure if anything did happen .... well surely you do still have the receipt ??!!!!
