As title, what does 175kb/second equate to in terms of megs worth of connection speed. I should be around 8meg but it feels more like 1meg!

How far are you from the exchange, attenuation, noise numbers, etc.? What is your download source?
I'm on PlusNet, about 4-5km from the exchange and can only get a 3 meg connection and I've seen around 300KB/s download.
There could be a number of factors involved in your download speed so you need to give more info.
Assuming you are on ADSL of course and not on cable or radio/satellite.

What are you using to get that figure?
Speedtest.net - The Global Broadband Speed Test is fairly accurate up to about 7 meg.
This is my most recent after switching back to 4meg:
This is when I was on 10:
I was on 10 for months and it never went above 8!
News tests showed it was s true ten tho, 1.18 Mb /sec.

To get a kilobit rating, simply times by 8: (175K) 175000*8 = 1400000 kb or 1.4 Meg (1.4 Mega bits per second)

After a couple of phone calls to BT India and them telling me to try everything my end ( i've been unplugging and turning off sockets all over the house) They finally turn around and tell me it must be a line fault from their end 2 hours later i get this, not great but better!
So my question is, 1 why can't they do whatever they did in the first place and 2 why do you constantly have to keep an eye on your connection speed every month and have to make phone calls to get it to be sped up
