Yep. Got it launch day, played it that evening, was bored of it by the end of the next day, and I haven't touched it again since.
Plus points...
All IMHO of course
Plus points...
- Looks very pretty
- Sounds good
- Very average story
- No variety in gameplay (it's just run shoot duck, shoot run duck, duck shoot run etc)
- Very linear with little or no scope for finishing the levels in any way other than the pre-defined path
- Very annoying cut scenes which you can't skip even after you've watched them. Especially annoying if you have just watched a 2 minute sequence, then died straight after, only to be forced to have to watch the same movie again.
- I found several graphical glitches and some bugs. Got one enemy to die, floating in the air etc
- Really naff enemy AI
- It's also very short
All IMHO of course

Ditto.
Impressive to begin with but soon gets a bit repetetive.
Multiplayer is a pain, dont know why but the controls seem to go very sluggish when I go online.
Iain - I take you didnt find that the 'X' button bypasses the cut scenes then eh?

tip for the last level - grenade the ******.
If you're playing anything other than insane, if you can get to the other end of the train, the chain gun makes light work of him.

Most enjoyable part of the game was going through Insane on Co-op - it was also the most frustrating at times.

Its quite sad really,
i recall when cd & dvd was introduced as the next gen medium for games,
"More room for levels", " more room for textures and graphics data"....."Whole worlds can be placed on the disc, you could run around a landscape for hours and never reach the edge" "gameplay will be revolutionised.........
said all the manufacturer,s in there hype....
The realists, said gameplay wouldnt increase, eyecandy wouldn,t make a game.. and unless they actually did what they said it would be overpriced..
And what do we have
£50 notes for a game completed in under 10 FFS 10 hours
contrast FF7 on the PS1, a minimum of 100 hours gameplay thats 10 times
more than you've just had
Why?? One avenue suggests "The Japanese cant handle long intense game play, so everything is short burst, 11 mins action and 7-8 mins cut scene or story......" MGS springs to mind!!
The other is that to actually fill a dvd with game data or story data would be prohibitive for cost, so they put on the bare minimum to make a game, and hit the release date....
who looses??
you do, you pay the £50, the game manufacturer gets the green light that you want 10hr games, and churns out more, and the standard drops...
so from games costing an average of £20 a year ago, were up to £50 now, and the Wii hasnt exactly pitched midway either.

I got it this week, initially non plussed.
Found the controls sluggish and also found it a pain to constantly have to hide, peek and shoot. Have played for a couple of hours now and it's growing on me.
The graphics are amazing particularly when you sprint forwards.
I think there's a lot of enjoyment to be had in the matches on-line once I figure out how to avoid being slaughtered within 30 seconds
Not really a patch on the Call of Duty series for gameplay though IMHO.
I'd recommend waiting a few weeks until Ebay is flooded with it for £20.

Seems a growing trend - a game with great visuals has sod all by the way of completion time - Tomb Raider Legend was another example.

Yep. I really enjoyed Tomb Raider Legend while it lasted, but it was woefully short and the puzzles were so easy as to be laughable
<controversial mode on>
Could this growing tend of dumbed down but visually pleasing games be because there are a lot of (how do I put this diplomatically?) people of lesser intelligence buying games these days. I can't remember that last time I had to really use any brain power in a computer game, (which is probably why I get bored with most of them so quickly)...

I know what you mean, and part of me thinks acheivement points are partially responsible.
The first few Tomb Raiders had some devilish puzzles in, Legend didn't. There's a growing trend of people buying games just to bump up their gamerscore tally - if they're too hard to get 1000 out of people will stop playing them - so the devs are compensating by making games for stupid...

The fact of the matter is, games are supposed to be fun and in this day and age need to be easy to pick up and get through. We live in a fast and furious approach to life. Most people are not interested in spending days in front of a screen playing one game and whilst £40-£50 may seem a lot for a short lived game, £50 dont buy you much nowadays so people seemed to be prepared to spend it.
Remember...... these games have to appeal to the masses and normally have to be pegged as such. For someone like me who does not have a lot of time to spend on a console, a 10hr completion cycle is fine.

Yes but, Gears was hyped to high heaven 2 years before it even got released, then it arrives and on the same day you're thinking "Where's the rest of it?"
I just prefer my games to last a bit longer then GAME's return policy, thats all - make me feel like I've actually got 50 quid's worth out of it. I like a challenge in a game (I wont get rid of one unless I get the full 1000 out of it) but I think 10,000 kills in ranked games is a joke - I doubt anyone will ever get it, the only people likely to attempt it are the Halo brigade...
The length of the game has been its biggest gripe for many people - seeing as its going to be a trilogy, I'm sure Epic will take it on board and make No. 2 a bit longer.(woo-hoo!! Act 6!! )

I put it down after an hour and been playing rainbox 6 vegas since. Very slick, as you would expect for such a long-standing franchise. It just looks, sounds and most importantly *feels* so right straight away...no need for tutorials or a degree in 3D control systems.
