They very good chips...and a few months ago they were the preferred choice of most

If I was building a new computer now though, Intel Core 2 duo would be the way to go.

Agreed. When I got my amd 4800+ it was about the fastest out there, but I think the Intels have leaped ahead again now

But it's a constantly changing thing of course, so it makes no real difference in the short, medium or long term, unless you have a burning desire to have the latest/greatest.

Core 2 duo is the 'conroe' chi as opposed to the Yonah Core duo - isn't it.

Anyway, AMD's quad core is actually 4 cores in one silicon. Intel's current quad core is more like 2 dual core 'welded together'

The core 2 duo's wipe the floor with the AMD's, even the FX chips aint a match and the 2 duo's are very clockable
As for quad core, Intel has their 2.66 quad core out now (65nm tech like the core 2 duo's) amd still are 90nm, amd are releasing their quad core (supposedly) mid to late next year, intel would have their latest quad core out by then with 45nm technology and it will be considerably better than the one they have released now
Building a system, go Intel and something like an ASUS 975x Mother board or the Intel 975XBX board.
You can use the following chipsets for core 2 duo. 945, 965, 975x, DONT get the 955 chipset, its not for these.
