Default IPAQ Networking Problem

First Problem-

The network that I am trying to connect a HP 6340 Ipaq to is a wireless one, protected by WPA encryption. Every time I insert the WPA key into the Ipaq it looks as if the Ipaq transposes the key into a longer one and, as a consequence, access to the network is denied.

I have tried using differing lengths of key, using fixed IP on the Ipaq, etc, and seem to be going nowhere. When I remove security from the network the Ipaq accesses it fine. Seems most odd given that this version Ipaq (allegedly) supports WPA keys.

Has anyone come across this problem and, if so, knows what the solution is please?

Second Problem -

Same network as above, but this time its a Creative Music Streamer. The creative box only uses WEP encryption. It does not support WPA.

Any ways around this one please eg a frmware upgrade for the Creative box?

Thanks

WB

What's the exact model of the Creative device? The Creative Network Blaster wireless router 2202-5 seems to support WEP and WPA-PSK. I'm guessing that's not what you have and it's the SoundBlaster Wireless Music device, and from what I've read, as you have found it's only got WEP and not WPA support, and I cannot find anything indicating there is an upgrade to provide WPA support.

Markus,

Its the latter. I guess you are saying that I'm stuffed then on the Creative problem?

Currently, yes, looks like you're a bit stuffed on the creative thing, unless the wireless network can be changed to use WEP instead of WPA, as I don't think you can do both at the same time. Might be worth having a look on the Creative support forums. I did find this thread which stated the following:

Here is what I have as far as requirements for a router to work:

1) It must be able to operate in 802.11.b mode (G only will not work)
2) It must support open key mode
3) It must broadcast its SSID
4) It must support WEP (the Wireless music does not currently support WPA)

There's also mention of firewalls and such, but I'm guessing the WEP/WPA thing is the first hurdle as if you cannot connect the device to the network there isn't much you can do.

Thanks Markus,

Problem is WEP is inherently insecure so the wireless modem/router only uses WPA. I will pass on the bad news to the owner.

Thanks for your help here.

Anyone any offers on the Ipaq problem please?

I've only got an rx1950, but it does have wireless capabilities and I do remember having a royal pain of a time getting it to talk to my WPA2 Personal protected network. Let me dig the bugger out and see if I can find out what settings I've got configured.

Here's what I have setup:

In "Configure Network Adapters" I've got "HP iPAQ Wi-Fi Wireless Adapter" configured to "use a specific address" and I've entered one of the IP addresses that is in my wireless networks DHCP range. Leaving it to "user server-assgined IP Address" also works, but I'm a funny sod and like to specify the address. I've configured the name servers in the "Name Servers" section as well.

In the "iPAQ Wireless" section I've set Wi-Fi to on and selected "View Wi-Fi Networks" This shows the available networks. I select the one I wish to connect to and ensure that the "connects to" option is set to "The Internet".

On the "Network Key" tab I've got the following options:

Authentication: Open, Shared, WPA, WPA-PSK. I've got WPA-PSK selected.

Data Encryption: WEP and TKIP. I've got TKIP selected.

Network Key: set to the password for the wireless network.

Once I entered the details I clicked OK, then was returned to the "Configure Wireless Networks" screen, where I clicked on the network I'd configured and clicked "Connect". Job done it connected.

Try those settings and see if they help any.

I've just done a very quick search and found this. Might be worth a read.

Markus,

Thanks for this. Seems the problem is a Win CE one, sorted by the hotfix. Problem is I need to dig out all the previous hotfixes AND undertake a clean rebuild of the Win CE device.

Will look at this in the morning when I'm not so tired.

Thanks for the help on this one, really appreciate it.

Cheers

No problem at all, I know how much of an **** it can be to get an iPAQ to connect wirelessly. I'm just use to Apple's wireless networking where it'll automacitally pick up the encryption level, so all you need to do is select the network name and enter the password.
