Slugish iMac G5
My work partner (graphic designer) has an iMac G5 that is regularly grinding to a halt, it just gets worse and worse over time then becomes almost unusable. Fans kick into turbo mode...
It's : iMac G5, 2gb RAM, 160gb HDD, most up to date 10.4, fully patched up.
100+GB of space, used for Photoshop use and surfing/email.
Machine is shutdown every night.
Tried doing the disk permissions, energy saver processor is set to auto (mine used to go a bit nuts and i set my PowerMac G5 to reduced now)
All sharing is off.
Any console logs we should be looking at that might hint at any issues?
firewall log doesnt show anything obvious...
Any thoughts? Marcus?

Doesn't the OS do routine maintenance overnight. I had a similar issue with my G5 recently and ran iDefrag which made a big difference. Just optimised the disks even though the fragmentation did not appear too bad.
It is worth also checking the CPU, RAM and disk usage via one of the utilities, think it is called system monitor in appications > utilities. This may help you see where you have a problem.
I found my RAM was maxing out and bought an extra 256Mb on ebay for a few quid and that helped also !

Allan - He already has 2GB. The machine is shutdown at night.
Markus - Told him to do those, I love the PRAM fix, it reminds me so much of the 'remove your prefs file' procedure we used to recommend to our os8/9 customers when we'd run out of suggestions. Sadly I know it works.... lol
