Right, i am a complete novice when it comes to broadband and I am finally looking at getting Broadband at home for my new laptop (due to arrive any day now).

I have searched a few threads about broadband on here and a few questions have been answered, however I have a couple of basic questions.

Probably going to go with a BT Total Broadband package.

1) I assume I still have to pay the standard BT line rental on top of what ever the broadband cost is?

2) Does my home phone number change?

3) The package comes with a "free" phone that gives me free evenings and weekend calls via the internet, does this replace my current home phone or do I end up having two phones in the house?

1/ Yes.

2/ No.

3/ This is an additional telephone, but it isn't a 'line', just something you plug into your computer and can make calls. The quaility varies.

You get an 05 number for the broadband phone so although you have 1 'line', you'll have two phone numbers. The current one that rings your home line, and a 2nd one that rings the broadband phone.

 

you could also check out ukonline do a web search in some areas they do a £9.99/month 1mb package this sits on top of a bt line, been using it since may only been out of service once for a day due to them.

Before making any decision regarding BB, check this site out first for ratings http://www.thinkbroadband.com/
Remember, once you sign up, you might be stuck with cr4p customer service for a year before you can pull out. I'm not sure if BT is a highly recommended ISP.

I was with Freeserve for many years then Wanadoo took over, no problems at all until Orange bought the company. 'Down hill'.
I thought i found a good deal and decided to move to SkyBB and it even plunged further down hill from there on.

I can name the companies that are not rated at all highly.

Carphone warehouse (includes AOL now)
Orange.

That sums up the ones you want to avoid like the plague.

you mean you fell for the crap they said?!!
No doubt you missed some of the small print like the rather expensive rate for calling their call centres? and the fact you dont get the same levels of services to your phone (they are all added extras which make them more expensive than BT) and you should read some of the complaints by other telcos and customers (its interesting reading ) about misleading advertising....
