Question Which hard-drive?

After a bit of advice please.

I am about to purchase a new laptop and part of the configuration offers me the following two hard drives for the same price, any suggestions on which would be better and why?

1) 120GB 5400rpm SATA

2) 100GB 7200rpm SATA

Is the extra speed noticable and better than the extra capacity?

You should look at the access time on the disks, I suspect the 2nd disk will be able to access data faster than the 1st.

Whether you will notice it or not doing general day to day stuff I'm not sure.

for a laptop it's not as simple as speed. . .

7200 will use more power, run hotter, run louder - and yes probabily be quicker.

Only you can tell whether or not you really need the extra 20% of capacity - my guess is probably not. I'd go for the faster drive, because you'll get the benefit from that all the time; laptop discs are always slower than desktop and are, in my experience, more of a bottleneck.

Personally I'd go for the extra capacity over the faster, hotter, more power hungry 7200 drive

Coud do with the model numbers of the drives: go for the one with more cache.
