drum machines?
does anyone know of a good drum machine good for studio and live use? ive been looking at the alesis sr-16 with foot pedals but any other recomendations??

If you want to do it on the cheap. yes the Alesis/Ion drum machine and pads will suffice. BE WARNED though - it's erm... not very substantial!! 
The SR16 sounds are sh1te. and it doesn't have a MIDI in (so you can't lpay the SR16 sounds from another device, such as a PC
)
If you wan't to do it properly. check out the Roland V-Drums
, but add a "0" to you budget
The yamaha ones are also pretty good.
Kinda depends on what you want to use it for - I've got an Ion kit and incorporated the pads/triggers into an existing kit, running with an Akai Sampler (for loops and decent drums)

Forgot to add - if you want a decent druma machine (no pads/pedals), it's GOT to be the Akai MPC range (or if you can find it, an old MPC60) - these are the Daddys when it comes to percussion/rhythm programming 
but again, you're lookin at a few quid.....
Cheap and cheerful (but pretty good) is the Boss Dr rhythm boxes.......
All pretty much do the same (pattern based sequencing*) - but the Boss/Roland stuff just does it better. You could also look out for a used Roland R5 or R8.
*pattern-based sequencing : 1 loop for each section of the song, or for different elements of the song (just in case you didn't know what I was bleating on about!)

LOL!! I did say that it was the "Daddy"!!!
The DR670 is a good little drum machine It is the successor to the DR550mk2 (I had a Dr550mk1) - great little machine.
hth - just stay away from the SR16!! (all imho )

taptempo start (?) - if you want a 4-click intro, you can just program a pattern with a click/ho-hat in it
770 - yes. more of everything, but you can also incorporate proper pads into the system. Bigger memory & more advanced pedal controls

oh right. ummm, not sure about that tbh...... can't do it with the 770.
again, even with the MPC, you can set up tap tempo in write mode, but not play back mode.......

hi again! still havent gone for one yet! been looking at a 2nd hand boss 550. you usedto have one. is it worth having nowadays? or should i be looking more at the 670/770/880?? im on a bit of a limited budget so trying to see what i can pick up for under £100.

SR16's aren't that bad, I've had worse We used one on the road and in the studio for 2 years and it never let us down, however I do agree it is a little limited in todays world...
I have a Yamaha RM50 that is no longer needed if that's any use to you?
