Question Netgear SC101 Alternatives

I was thinking of purchasing one of these as I seek to improve the robustness of my backup processes. However I don't hear good things about this unit.

Some say that the lack of active cooling for the drives can cause overheating problems. Others say tha having to access the unit via a PC client is a missed opportunity. There is also the issue that this unit only runs on windows (so Linux users are out).

Has anyone any suggestions for a similar unit that will undertake the backup tasks that the SC101 was designed for and is Op System independent? I particularly like the fact that you can use any old drives lying around which means that, for me, there's a whole host of unused IDE drives that could be given a new lease of life.

Thanks in advance for your inputs.

Avoid the Netgear like the plague.

I have a linkstation - 250gb network drive, Mac and Windows compatible, built in ftp + print server. Easy setup, works like a dream.

You can also hack it if requried to install more linux stuff.

Jowl,

Just looked at the Linkstation stuff. All seem to be dedicated hard drive units. What I would prefer is a unit where I can put in and take out my own drives, ie some kind of enclosure. This is why the SC101 looked an attractive unit until my research showed otherwise.

Any other inputs to this query please?

Thanks

WB

Yeah, thats one of the trouble with it. You can but your own drive in but it's not a case of undoing a few screws and away you go.

I think Icybox do something like that though....though I haven't seen reviews.

Just had a quick look and found this Icybox.

Like I say, I've not read any reviews but the I've used a few Icybox enclosures (2.5, 3.5 Usb/Firewire) and they've all been easy to use and of good quality.

The only thing I did notice is that it doesn't have any cooling fans. I'm not sure this would be a great problem...suppose if it's on 24/7 it might be....but I would risk it!

Jowl,

Cheers again for your input. Since your last post I have been searching around under NAS. Have found a number of options like this one > Products - Storage Depot

However they are fully integrated units with usb expansion. I will keep looking on the net to see what I can foind.

Shout if you see anything else that might look suitable.

Cheers

WB

PS Just found this as well. A tad expensive as an empty enclosure but seems a good device. > NAS Network Storage Consultancy and Sales
